Il Traditional Unionist Voice e il Demopcratic Unionist Party hanno raggiunto un accordo per non forzare due elezioni suppletive nei consigli comunali
Ma, rivelando che Mark Russell, consigliere del TUV a Craigavon, si stava apprestando a lasciare la vita politica, il TUV ha affermato di aver raggiunto un accordo con il DUP per permettere ai membri dei due partiti di essere co-optati nei rispettivi consigli.
Confermando l’accordo, il parlamentare del DUP di North Antrim Mervyn Storey, che ha ammesso di essere rimasto sorpreso della telefonata fatta la scorsa settimana da Allister che chiedeva un incontro per discutere un accordo, ha accusato il suo ex collega di partito di mettere il pragmatismo davanti ai principi.
Ricordando il momento nel quale ricevette la telefonata dell’ex parlamentare europeo, Storey ha detto al News Letter: “Ho guardato il telefono e ho pensato ‘Di certo non mi chiederà di passare con il suo partito perché non succederà’ ma ho risposto alla telefonata come avrei fatto con chiunque altro”.
In un comunicato, il TUV ha detto: “Alla luce del recente accordo raggiunto con il DUP, il TUV questa sera (lunedì, Ndt) non chiederà lo svolgimento di un’elezione suppletiva nel distretto elettorale di Ballymoney.
“Nei colloqui tra i partiti della scorsa settimana, abbiamo convenuto che il TUV permetterà al DUP di inserire un proprio membro a Ballymoney mentre il DUP ricambierà in occasione della prossima dimissione TUV a Craigavon.
“Il consigliere Mark Russell, per ragioni personale e lavorative, presto si dimetterà dal Craigavon Council.
“Quando lo farà, il DUP ha acconsentito a non opporsi al rimpiazzo previsto dal TUV. In queste circostanze è mutualmente vantaggioso per entrambi i partiti seguire la strada tracciata e permettere ai contribuenti di Ballymoney e Craigavon di risparmiare denaro.
“Anche l’UUP è stato coinvolto nelle discussioni con il consigliere Russell a Craigavon e riconosciamo ed apprezziamo la loro collaborazione. Una cooperazione di questo tipo tra gli unionisti è benefica”.
Storey ha affermato che Allister lo ha contattato all’inizio della scorsa settimana dicendo di avere “una proposta per il mio partito”.
Ha proseguito asserendo che “è strano che il leader del TUV, che dispensa la sua bile contro il DUP la sera dei risultati delle elezioni europee, quando disse che c’erano molti P45 (nel gergo britannico indica la fine dell’occupazione, Ndt) tra i 66.000 voti e che il DUP metteva il libretto degli assegni davanti alla propria coscienza. Invece poi è dovuto venire da chi, lui riteneva, metteva i soldi davanti alla coscienza per chiedere di appoggiare una sua proposta.
“Questa decisione non è stata fatta per il bene dell’unionismo o per risparmiare i soldi dei contribuenti di Ballymoney”, ha concluso Storey.

TUV-DUP deal on council seats
THE TUV and DUP have come to an agreement not to force two council by-elections.
But, revealing that a TUV councillor in Craigavon, Mark Russell, was also leaving political life, the TUV said it had reached an agreement with the DUP to allow members of each party to be co-opted onto the respective councils.
Confirming the deal, North Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey, who admitted that he was surprised to get a phone call from Mr Allister at the start of last week requesting discussions about a pact, accused his former DUP colleague of putting pragmatism ahead of principle.
Recalling the moment when he received the former MEP’s call, Mr Storey told the News Letter: “I looked at the phone and thought ‘He’s certainly not asking me to join because that ain’t coming’ but I took the call in the same way I’d take any other.”
In a statement, the TUV said: “In light of an agreement reached with the DUP, TUV did not tonight force a by-election in the Bann Valley electoral district of Ballymoney.
“In discussions between the parties over the last week it was agreed that if the TUV permitted a co-option in Ballymoney then the DUP would reciprocate in respect of an upcoming TUV vacancy in Craigavon.
“Councillor Mark Russell, for personal and business reasons, will shortly stand down from Craigavon Council.
“When he does, the DUP has agreed not to oppose the co-option of a TUV replacement. In these circumstances it was mutually advantageous to both parties to follow the course agreed and thereby the ratepayers of both Ballymoney and Craigavon can be saved expense.
“The UUP has also been involved in related discussions with councillor Russell in Craigavon and we acknowledge and appreciate their cooperation there. Such all round inter-unionist cooperation is sensible and beneficial.”
Mr Storey said that Mr Allister had approached him at the start of last week saying that he had a “proposition to put to my party”.
Mr Storey said: “I think it is very strange that the leader of the TUV, who dispensed his bile against the DUP on the evening of the Euro election result, who said that there are a lot of P45s in 66,000 votes and said that the DUP had put its chequebook ahead of its conscience, then had to come and ask one of those who he claimed had put his chequebook before his conscience to endorse his proposition.
“This decision was not made in the better interests of unionism or out of concern for the ratepayers of Ballymoney.”
