Adams dispiaciuto per rifiuto Orange Order

Gerry Adams ha definito”deludente” la decisione della dirigenza dell’Orange Order di rifiutare i colloqui offerti dallo Sinn Fein sulle parate contenziose

Il presidente dello Sinn Fein ha detto che il rifiuto di parlare con i repubblicani fa sorgere domande sul professato desiderio dell’Ordine di raggiungere oltre la propria comunità.

“Come può l’Orange Order sperare di essere una parte costruttiva nella nuova deroga politica se rifiutano di accettare il mandato elettorale del più grande partito del Nord?”

Il parlamentare di West Belfast aveva chiesto un incontro con l’Ordine subito dopo l’esplosione di violenza nella zona di Ardoyne a North Belfast, avvenuta lunedì dopo il passaggio di una parata contenziosa del 12 luglio.

Ma venerdì il Gran Segretario dell’istituzione Drew Nelson ha rifiutato la richiesta di dialogo e ha affermato che agli orangisti non era stato dato il rispetto che meritano.

Tempo per il rispetto

“E’ tempo che i nazionalisti ed i repubblicani mostrino rispetto e tolleranza per l’Orange Order e venga permesso loro di continuare a celebrare la loro cultura”, ha aggiunto Nelson.

Per il Gran Segretario i repubblicani dovrebbero chiedere scusa per la morte dei loro confratelli durante i Troubles prima di poter avviare qualsiasi colloquio con lo Sinn Fein.

Ma Adams ha affermato che mentre la sua opinione sull’IRA potrebbe essere differente da quella dell’Orange Order, ha ricordato di avere già pubblicamente comunicato il proprio dispiacere per le morti inflitte dai Provisional e di non avere mai glorificato le loro azioni.

“Per la cronaca, non ho mai glorificato le morti causate dall’IRA. Le mie posizioni sull’IRA sono state registrate pubblicamente. Nelson è in disaccordo con me. Egli, come me, ha diritto alla propria opinione. Ho anche dichiarato il mio dispiacere per i morti ed i feriti provocati dai repubblicani. Questo include i membri delle organizzazioni lealiste”.

Nel frattempo il leader del Traditional Unionist Voice, Jim Allister, un grande oppositore al potere condiviso di Stormont, ha accolto favorevolmente le posizioni dell’Orange Order.

“E’ gratificante, mentre la maggior parte dei politici unionisti hanno svenduto la questione – fino al punto di saltellare nel governo con i leader dell’IRA/Sinn Fein – che il Gran Segretario abbia il coraggio morale e politico di dire ciò che è giusto e di esporre un fermo principio”.

Adams ‘disappointed’ by Order’s refusal to talk

Gerry Adams has described as “disappointing” a decision by the Orange Order leadership to reject a talks offer from Sinn Fein over contentious parades.

The Sinn Fein President said the refusal to talk with republicans brought into question the order’s professed desire to reach out beyond their own community.

“How can the Orange Order hope to be a constructive part of the new political dispensation if they refuse to accept the electoral mandate of the largest party in the north?”

The west Belfast MP had urged engagement with the Order in the wake of the violence which flared in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast on Monday after a contentious Twelfth of July parade.

But on Friday the Grand Secretary of the institution Drew Nelson rejected that request for dialogue and said Orangemen were not being given the respect they deserved.

‘Time for respect’

“It’s time nationalists and republicans showed respect and tolerance for Orange Order and allowed them to get on with celebrating their culture,” he added.

He said republicans would have to apologise for the murder of their brethren during the Troubles before they would contemplate talking to Sinn Fein.

But Mr Adams said that while his opinion on the IRA may be different from the Order’s, he pointed out that he had already publicly stated his regret over the deaths inflicted by the Provisionals and had never glorified their actions.

“For the record I have never glorified IRA killings. My position on the IRA is a matter of public record. Mr Nelson disagrees with me. He, like me, is entitled to his opinion. I have also stated my regrets at the deaths and injuries caused by republicans. This includes members of loyal institutions.”

Meanwhile, Traditional Unionist Voice leader Jim Allister, a prominent opponent of the powersharing arrangements at Stormont, welcomed the Orange Order stance.

“It is refreshing, at a time when most Unionist politicians have sold out on the issue – to the point of cavorting in government with IRA/Sinn Fein leaders – that the Grand Secretary has the moral and political courage to say what is right and to expound a principled stand.”
