Hillary Clinton, segretario di Stato americano, è tra coloro che sono chiamati a far pressione sui governi britannico e irlandese.
Marian Price, 58 anni, si trova ricoverata in ospedale dopo essere stata tenuta per oltre un anno in completo isolamento in attesa di comparire in aula per rispondere dell’accusa di aver partecipato ad un meeting a Derry in sostegno ad un’organizzazione illegale.
I medici hanno affermato che non può recarsi in tribunale.
Il presidente dello Sinn Fein, che dovrebbe recarsi negli Stati Uniti questa settimana, e il vice primo ministro nordirlandese Martin McGuinness, hanno scritto ai leader politici affermando che il prolungato imprigionamento di Marian Price – conosciuta anche come Price McGlinchey – è un grave casi di ingiustizia e una negazione dei diritti umani e giudiziari.
I due politici si sono detti preoccupati per le modalità e le condizioni in cui lei è stata detenuta dal suo arresto nel maggio dell’anno scorso. La sua detenzione – prima in carcere e poi in ospedale – era ingiusta e in contrasto con i principi del diritto naturale.
Hanno scritto: “In tutti questi passaggi la sua salute ha continuato a deteriorarsi. Alcuni medici che hanno esaminato la signora Price McGlinchey hanno confermato che la sua salute mentale ha sofferto molto e che non sarebbe in grado di partecipare in modo significativo ad una «revisione» del suo caso.
“Crediamo fermamente che Marian Price McGlinchey dovrebbe essere liberata. I suoi diritti umani sono stati violati. Le è stata negata la giustizia e il giusto processo. È gravemente malata. La sua detenzione mina il sistema giudiziario e il processo politico. Chiaramente lei non è una minaccia per nessuno”.
Marian Price fu incarcerata per il suo ruolo negli attentati dinamitardi di Londra, tra cui l’esplosione all’Old Bailey del marzo 1973, quando rimasero ferite 200 persone ed un uomo morì di infarto.
Ma lei è un fiera oppositrice della strategia del processo di pace voluta da Adams e McGuinness. È stata arrestata dopo essere stato fotografata al City Cemetery di Derry mentre reggeva un foglio da cui un uomo a volto coperto leggeva le minacce contro gli agenti di polizia cattolici.
Era stata rilasciata con la condizionale, ma l’allora Segretario di Stato per l’Irlanda del Nord, Owen Paterson, le revocò la licenza di rilascio, quindi venne riportata in carcere. In seguito i suoi legali hanno tentato di far decadere l’accusa e hanno sostenuto che i medici della prigioni e un dottore nominato dalle Nazioni Unite hanno concordato sulla sua incapacità a sostenere un processo a causa del deterioramento delle sue condizioni di salute.
Marian Price dovrebbe comparire nuovamente in aula il 21 novembre.
Ma l’intervento di McGuinness probabilmente acuirà le tensioni tra unionisti e nazionalisti, dopo che lo Sinn Fein ha chiesto il ritiro delle accuse contro un ex leader dell’IRA all’interno della prigione di Maze, Padraic Wilson.
I consiglieri del partito stanno inoltre facendo pressione per ottenere il rilascio di Gerry McGeough, condannato a 20 anni di carcere nell’aprile 2011 per il tentato omicidio di Sammy Brush avvenuto nel 1981. Brush, adesso consigliere unionista a Dungannon, venne ferito in un agguato IRA mentre era membro dell’Ulster Defence Regiment.
Padraic Wilson, 53 anni da Andersonstown, West Belfast, è stato accusato di appartenenza IRA e di aver partecipato ad una riunione a sostegno dell’IRA. L’Alta Corte ha concesso il rilascio con la condizionale. Le accuse sono collegate ad un’indagine di polizia sull’omicidio di Robert McCartney, 33 anni, avvenuto nel 2005 all’esterno di un bar di Belfast, pestato ed accoltellato a morte da alcuni repubblicani.
Wilson avrebbe inoltre partecipato a due incontri con la famiglia McCartney nel periodo seguente all’omicidio, come parte di un’inchiesta interna della formazione armata repubblicana.

Price (58) the former Old Bailey bomber, is ill in a Belfas thospital after being in virtual solitary prison confinement awaiting trial accused of addressing a meeting in Derry in support of a proscribed organisation.
Doctors have claimed she is unfit to face the charge.
The Sinn Fein president who is due to visit the States later this week, and Mr McGuinness, the deputy Northern Ireland First Minister, have written to the political leaders claiming the continued imprisonment of Price – she is also known as Mrs Price McGlinchey – was a serious case of injustice and a denial of human and judicial rights.
They said they were concerned about the manner and conditions under which she has been detained since her arrest in May last year. Her detention – first in jail and later in hospital – was unjust and ran contrary to the principles of natural justice.
They Sinn Fein leaders said in their letter: “In all of these institutions her health has continued to deteriorate. A number of doctors who have examined Mrs Price McGlinchey have confirmed that her mental health has suffered greatly and that she would be unable to participate meaningfully in a ‘review’ of her case.
“We believe very strongly that Marian Price McGlinchey should be released. Her human rights have been breached. She has been denied justice and due process. She is seriously ill. Her detention undermines the justice system and the political process. She clearly presents no threat to anyone.”
Price was jailed for her part in IRA bombings in London, including the Old Bailey, in March 1973 in which 200 people were injured. One man died of a heart attack.
But she is a fierce opponent of the Adams-McGuinness peace process strategy and was arrested after being filmed at the City Cemetery in Derry where she held a statement for a masked man to read in which threats were made against Catholic police officers.
She was released on bail, but the then Northern Ireland Secretary of State revoked her licence and she was sent back to prison. Later her legal representatives attempted to have the charge dropped and claimed prison doctors and a UN doctor agreed she was unfit to stand trial because of her deteriorating medical condition.
Price is due to appear in court again on November 21.
But the intervention of Mr McGuinness is likely to add to tensions between unionists and nationalists at the where Sinn Fein has called for charges against a former IRA leader inside the Maze Prison, Padraic Wilson, to be dropped.
Party councillors are also pressing for the release of Gerry McGeough, who was jailed for 20 years in April last year for the attempted murder in 1981 of one of their council colleagues in Dungannon, Co Tyrone, Sammy Brush who was shot by the IRA at a time when he was a member of the Defence Regiment.
Wilson, 53, from Andersonstown, west Belfast, who has been accused of IRA membership and addressing a meeting in support of the IRA, was granted bail at the Northern Ireland High Court today. The charges are linked to a police investigation into the 2005 murder of , 33, who was stabbed by republicans outside a bar near the centre of Belfast.
It has been alleged that Wilson held at least two meetings with Mr McCartney’s family in the aftermath of the killing as part of an IRA inquiry.
