Il presidente Gerry Adams ha sfidato i responsabili dell’attacco di Newry a confrontarsi con la popolazione e giustificare le proprie azioni, indicandoli come “i soldati del cessate-il-fuoco” che “non hanno interesse in un’Irlanda unita”
I repubblicani – in particolar modo la Real IRA – sono accusati per la bomba da 120 kg, esplosa alle 22.37 di lunedì sera, mentre i poliziotti evacuavano la zona.

La Mazda blu, con le targhe della Contea di Monaghan, è stata abbandonata dopo essere stata piazzata contro i cancelli del tribunale.
La polizia parla di “miracolo” per il mancato ferimento o uccisione.
Matt Baggott, comandante della polizia, ha affermato che “non ci sono scuse per aver piazzato bombe nelle nostre strade.
“E’ stato chiaramente imprudente ed insensibile”, ha detto.
“E, inoltre, il tempo concesso era molto limitato”.
Telefonate di avvertimento con l’appropriata parola in codice sono state fatte all’ospedale di Newry alle 22.20 e ad un esercizio commerciale alle 22.22, concedendo solo 17 minuti per evacuare l’intera zona prima dello scoppio della bomba.
I cancelli del tribunale, altamente fortificato, sono stati seriamente danneggiati e la gente nel raggio di molte miglia ha udito chiaramente lo scoppio e le finestre hanno tremato.
Il centro cittadino di Newry è stato isolato mentre gli agenti della polizia scientifica hanno esaminato l’area alla ricerca di indizi.
Le lezioni alla vicina Windsor Hill Primary School sono state cancellate.
Matt Baggott ha detto di comprendere la frustrazione dei residenti, ma che il disagio era inevitabile.
“E’ importante prendere il tempo necessario per analizzare questa scena del crimine, fare tutto quanto in nostro potere per comprendere quanto accaduto, comprendere tutto quello che abbiamo, perché è essenziale portare queste persone davati alla giustizia”, ha affermato.
“E la seconda cosa in relazione ad entrambi gli incidenti (Keady e Newry): chiediamo ai nostri artificieri di fare un lavoro che, francamente, non vorrei mai fare personalmente.
“Gli chiediamo di fare un lavoro responsabile per disinnescare o trattare con ordigni messi lì per uccidere o mutilare.
“Sono un po’ dispiaciuto per alcuni commenti, che chiedono «perché non vi siete mossi più alla svelta?»”, ha aggiunto.
“Mai e poi mai chiederò a qualcuno che deve agire per nostro conto nel disinnescare le cose di «muoversi», perché molto francamente dobbiamo dare a queste persone coraggiose tutto il tempo di cui hanno bisogno per affrontare questo cose in nostro nome”.
L’Assemblea di Stormont si aperta martedì con la condanna di tutti i partiti all’attacco di Newry, giunto a pochi giorni dalla mancata detonazione di una bomba di mortaio fuori dalla stazione di polizia di Keady.
A marzo 2009 i repubblicani della Real IRA uccisero due soldati a Massereene Barracks ad Antrim. Due giorni dopo la Conitnuity IRA colpì a morte l’agente Stephen Carroll a Craigavon, mentre si trovava in servizio.
A settembre c’è stato il ritrovamento di un ordigno di 600 libbre (circa 250 kg) nella cittadina di Forkhill, in South Armagh.
Lo scorso mese un poliziotto, Peadar Heffron, è rimasto gravemente ferito dallo scoppio di un ordigno posizionato sotto alla sua vettura, perdendo una gamba, mentre alcune stazioni di polizia sono state attaccate con colpi di arma da fuoco nelle ultime settimane.
L’attacco di Newry sarebbe stato compiuto con la più ingente quantità di esplosivo sin dalla bomba di Omagh del 1998.

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has challenged those behind a car bomb attack in Newry to face the public and justify their actions, branding them ‘ceasefire soldiers’ who ‘have no interest in a united Ireland’.
Dissident republicans have been blamed for the 250lb bomb which went off at 10.37pm on Monday night, as officers were still evacuating the area.
‘Miracle’
The blue Mazda vehicle, which carried registration plates from Co Monaghan, was abandoned after being reversed against the gates of the court.
Police said it was a “miracle” no-one was injured or killed in the explosion.
PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott said there was “absolutely no excuse for bringing bombs onto our streets.”
“It was clearly reckless at the best and callous at the worst,” he said.
“But added to that, the timing given was severely limited.”
Coded warnings were phoned in to a local hospital at 10.20pm and a local business at 10.22pm giving officers about 17 minutes to clear the area before the bomb exploded.
The gates of the heavily fortified courthouse were badly damaged and people for miles around said they clearly heard the blast and windows were shaken.
Newry city centre was sealed off on Tuesday as police forensic experts combed area for clues.
Many road closures have since been lifted but New Street remains closed.
Classes at nearby Windsor Hill Primary School have also been cancelled.
Chief Constable Baggott said he understood the frustration of residents, but that the disruption was unavoidable.
“It’s important that we take as long as it takes to deal with this scene (in Newry) as a crime scene, do everything we can forensically to understand what’s happened, to understand what we’ve got because that’s essential to bringing these people to justice,” he said.
“And the second thing is in relation to both (Keady and Newry) we ask some of our technical officers to do a job that quite frankly I would never want to do personally.
“We ask them to do a job responsibly to defuse and deal with devices that are put there to maim or kill.
“I have been a little disappointed by some of the comments, such as ‘why couldn’t you do it quicker?’,” he added.
“Well I will never, never ask anybody that’s tasked on our behalf with defusing things to ‘hurry it up’, because quite frankly we owe it to these brave courageous people to give them as much time as they need to deal with these things on our behalf.”
The Stormont Assembly opened its proceedings on Tuesday with cross-party condemnation of the attack, which comes just days after a mortar bomb failed to detonate outside a police station in nearby Keady village.
Last March dissidents shot dead two soldiers at Massereene army barracks in Antrim. Two days later they gunned down police constable Stephen Carroll in Craigavon, Co Armagh as he answered a call for help.
In September police discovered a 600lb bomb in the south Armagh village of Forkhill.
Last month a Catholic police officer was seriously injured in car bomb attack in Co Antrim while a number of police stations have been shot at in recent weeks.
The Newry attack is thought to be the first time a large car bomb has exploded in Northern Ireland since the Real IRA bombing of Omagh in 1998.
