I paramilitari lealisti sarebbero responsabili degli spari che hanno gambizzato un quindicenne a Coleraine
Tre uomini a volto coperto, vestiti con abiti scuri, sono penetrati in un’abitazione in Glebe Avenue poco prima delle 6 di questa mattina.
Uno degli uomini era armato anche di una mazza da baseball.
Il givoane è stato trasportato prima al Causeway Hospital a Coleraine ma poi è stato trasferito al Royal Victoria Hospital, dove è entrato subito in sala operatoria per cercare di estrarre almeno un proiettile dagli arti inferiori.
L’Assistente al Comandante della Polizia, Will Kerr, ha parlato di atto “moralmente reprensibile”.
“È troppo presto per specificare quali sono i sospettati. Voglio dire, chiunque pensi che sparare ad un quindicenne faccia progredire verso qualsiasi obiettivo, è completamente folle”.
L’ufficiale ha rivelato che da giugno 2012, la polizia ha eseguito 69 arresti in relazione agli attacchi punitivi. Diciotto persone sono state poi formalmente accusate.
L’aggressione di questa notte è il secondo incidente del genere nella zona di Coleraine in meno di una settimana. In entrambi i casi le responsabilità sarebbero dei paramilitari lealisti.
John Dallat, parlamentare SDLP per East Derry, si è detto “inorridito di apprendere che hanno sparato alle gambe di un giovane di 15 anni”.
“Questo è uno sviluppo molto preoccupante per le persone che vivono nella zona. Esorto la comunità a collaborare con la polizia e fornire informazioni che aiuteranno a compiere degli arresti.
“Vorrei anche chiedere al capo della polizia, alla luce di questo attacco, di rivedere la sua posizione nei confronti dei paramilitari lealisti che stanno chiaramente violando i termini del loro cessate-il-fuoco.
“A bande di questa natura non deve essere permesso di abusare dei membri di questa comunità e di seguire il loro perverso concetto di «giustizia»”.
Il vice sindaco DUP Mark Fielding ha detto che non esiste “alcuna scusa o giustificazione per questo tipo di attività”.
“Questa è una barbarie. Ho pensato che le armi fossero lontane dalle strade. Nessuno ha il diritto di prendere la legge nelle proprie mani”, ha affermato.
“La vittima è un adolescente e la scorsa settimana è avvenuto lo stesso savanti ad una compagna adolescente e a un bambino piccolo. Due volte in una settimana. Adesso questo non deve più accadere”.
Yvonne Boyle, Alliance Party, ha descritto l’aggressione come “spregevole”.
“L’intera comunità è in stato di shock per un attentato così crudele contro un giovane ragazzo.
“Non si può permettere a questo genere di comportamenti di continuare ed è incredibile che la vittima avesse solamente 15 anni. Ferire gli altri è un modo totalmente inaccettabile di affrontare eventuali tensioni comunitarie”, ha aggiunto.
“I miei pensieri sono con la vittima e spero che farà un pieno recupero e sia in grado di superare le lesioni che ha sostenuto”.
In Assemblea a Stormont, l’attacco è stato condannato da tutti i parlamentari, insieme agli altri episodi di violenza, come la pipe bomb lanciata contro una pattuglia di polizia e il tentato incendio di un ufficio di Alliance Party a East Belfast.
Gregory Campbell, parlamentare di East Londonderry per il DUP, introducendo l’argomento ha detto che i responsabili delle recenti violenze “stanno cercando di riportarci al passato”.
“La comunitò deve essere assolutamente chiara, non solo nell’unirsi contro tali attacchi, ma deve portare oltre questa unità e assicurare che le persone che hanno eseguito questi attacchi non possano rifarlo”, ha affermato.
Gli eventi erano “vergognosi e sbagliati” anche per il leader del TUV Jim Allister.
Dominic Bradley, Sinn Féin, ha condannato l’incidente di Coleraine insieme a quello avvenuto nel suo collegio elettroale di Cullyhanna.

Boy, 15, shot in both legs
Loyalist paramilitaries are being blamed for shooting a 15-year-old boy in both legs in Coleraine, Co Londonderry.
Three masked men, wearing dark clothing, entered a house at Glebe Avenue just before 5am on Monday morning and shot him.
One of the men was also carrying a baseball bat.
He was taken to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine but has since been transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where it’s believed he underwent surgery to remove at least one bullet from his leg.
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Will Kerr said that the shooting was “morally reprehensible.”
“It’s too early to actually specify who the suspects are at that stage. I mean, anybody who thinks shooting a 15-year-old progresses any legitimate aim is absolute madness – the shooting of children.”
He revealed that since June last year, 69 arrests have been made by police in relation to punishment type attacks. Eighteen people have been charged.
Monday’s incident is the second shooting of this type in the wider Coleraine area in less than a week and loyalist gunmen are being blamed for both.
John Dallat, SDLP MLA for East Derry, has hit out at the gang responsible, saying he was “horrified to learn of the kneecapping of a 15 year old child.”
“This is an extremely worrying development for people living in the area. I would urge the community to co-operate with the police and provide information which will help bring about an arrest.”
“I would also ask the Chief Constable, in light of this attack to revise his position in respect of loyalist paramilitaries who are clearly flouting the terms of their ceasefire.
“Gangs of this nature must not be allowed to abuse members of this community and deliver their perverse concept of ‘justice’.”
DUP deputy Mayor Mark Fielding said there was “no excuse or justification for this type of activity”.
“This is barbaric, I thought the guns were off the streets, no-one has the right to take the law into their own hands,” he said.
“This is a teenager and last week it was done in front of a teenage partner and a young baby was in the house so this is twice in a week and this has to stop.”
Alliance Councillor Yvonne Boyle described the shooting as “despicable.”
“The whole community is in shock at such a cruel attack on a young boy.
“This type of behaviour cannot be allowed to continue and it is unbelievable that the victim was only 15-years-old. Causing harm to others is a completely unacceptable way to deal with any tensions in the community,” she added.
“My thoughts are with the victim and I hope he will make a full recovery and be able to overcome the injuries he sustained.”
In the assembly, the incident was condemned by MLAs along with other violent and paramilitary-style incidents, including a pipe bomb thrown at police in Londonderry and an arson attack on a Belfast Alliance Party office.
East Londonderry DUP MLA Gregory Campbell, introducing the topic, said those responsible for recent violence “want to try to drive us back to the past”.
“The community has to be absolutely clear, not just in its unity of opposition to such attacks, which, of course, we will demonstrate today, but it must take that unity further and ensure that the people who carried out those attacks cannot do so again,” he said.
TUV leader Jim Allister said the events were “shameful and wrong”.
Sinn Féin’s Dominic Bradley condemned the Coleraine incident along with another recent shooting in his constituency of Cullyhanna in Co Armagh.
Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
