Gli scontri sono scoppiati tra le 20 e le 22 di domenica nelle zone di Donegall Road e Sandy Row.
I contestatori hanno bloccato Donegall Road con cassonetti incendiati e hanno “attaccato massicciamente” la PSNI con mattoni e bottiglie. Un agente di polizia è stato ferito lievemente.
La polizia ha fermato un diciottenne, in seguito rilasciato.
Ruth Patterson, DUP, ha detto che i disordini sono iniziati dopo che un gruppo di manifestanti per la disputa delle bandiere sono stati “dileggiati” dalla gente che festeggiava San Patrizio.
Ha affermato l’unionista: “Un gruppo di persone voleva avviare una protesta per le bandiere in uno dei bar di Shaftesbury Square e nel loro girovagare sono stati fermati dalla polizia e rimandati in Donegall Road quando una folla di persone che stavano celebrando San Patrizio hanno gridato e ripetuto slogan. Ecco quando sono iniziati i disordini.
“La polizia deve fare il proprio lavoro ma ci sembra esiste un ordine del giorno a senso unico in questo momento, con la PSNI che agisce pesantemente contro i manifestanti per le bandiere mentre ad altri perdona tutto”.
La calma è stata riportata nella zona intorno alle 22.
Gli agenti della squadra investigativa impegnata nell’Operazione Dulcet – che indagano sui reati collegati alle proteste per la disputa delle bandiere in Irlanda del Nord – hanno detto che era “chiaro fin dall’inizio che ci sarebbero state conseguenze per le persone impegnate in attività illegali”.
Continua la dichiarazione della polizia: “La PSNI continuerà a perseguire i responsabili e saranno svolte indagini per identificare coloro che sono coinvolti nei disordini”.

Officer hurt amid Belfast trouble
A crowd of masked youths threw missiles at police during disorder in south Belfast on Sunday night, with one officer sustaining injuries.
Bouts of sporadic trouble flared in the Donegall Road, Sandy Row area from 8pm to 10pm.
Protestors blocked the Donegall Road with burning bins and carried out “sustained attacks” on the PSNI with bricks and bottles. One officer suffered minor injuries.
Police arrested an 18-year-old man who has since been released.
Ruth Patterson of the DUP said the disturbances started after a group of flag protestors were “taunted” by people celebrating St Patrick’s Day.
She said: “A group of people intended to have a flag protest at one of the bars in Shaftesbury Square and on their way round police stopped them and pushed them back into the Donegall Road when at which point a crowd of people who had been celebrating St Patrick’s Day shouted and chanted. That is when trouble ensued.
“The police are there to do a job and we understand that but there seems to be a one-sided agenda at the moment with the PSNI and that is most certainly to come down very heavily on flag protestors while others get away with everything.”
Calm was restored to the area by around 10pm.
Officers from the PSNI’s Operation Dulcet inquiry team – who are investigating offences linked to the Union flag protests in Northern Ireland – said they have been “clear from the outset that there will be consequences for individuals who engage in illegal activity.”
A statement continued: “The PSNI have and will continue to make people amenable to the courts and will be carrying out further enquiries to identify those involved in the disorder.”
