Eletto sabato il successore di Margaret Ritchie al timone dell’SDLP durante la conferenza annuale di Belfast
“Questo è il momento più fiero della mia carriera politica” ha affermato davanti ai delegati del partito riuniti nel Ramada Hotel di Belfast.
Ha sconfitto gli altri tre candidati per la leadership – Patsy McGlone, Alex Attwood ed il secondo classificato Conall McDevitt.
Solo 36 voti hanno separato McDonnell e McDevitt all’ultimo conteggio.
McDonnell ha ringraziato i contendenti e ha spiegato di voler guidare il partito ad una rinascita politica – è il secondo leader eletto in meno di due anni e nella precedente elezione del 2009 si era piazzato alle spalle di Margaret Ritchie.
Ha inviato un messaggio chiaro al DUP ed allo Sinn Fein nel discorso di sabato.
“Abbiamo aiutato a raggiungere l’accordo in Irlanda nel 1998”, ha affermato – riferendosi alla firma dell’Accordo del Venerdì Santo.
“I due partiti che sono al potere adesso hanno trasformato quell’Irlanda e quell’incredibile opportunità in uno sporco piccolo accordo – sono come i signori della guerra afgani intenti a dividersi le spoglie”.
Ha affermato di voler riportare il partito alla sua posizione di rilevanza.
“Per me il compito è chiaro”, ha detto alla platea.
“Mi avete scelto per guidare il recupero e la rinascita di questo partito.
“Lo farò. Voglio che vi godiate il resto della serata perché da domani il lavoro dovrà iniziare”.
Margaret Ritchie aveva annunciato le dimissioni a settembre, dopo gli scarsi risultati elettorali.
Il primo ministro nordirlandese Peter Robinson ha scritto le proprie congratulazioni al nuovo leader SDLP via Twitter: “Ben fatto Alasdair. Guardo avanti per lavorare con te”.
Il presidente dello Sinn Fein Gerry Adams ha detto: “Auguro il meglio ad Alasdair McDonnell. Spero il nuovo leader mostrerà un’attitudine positiva, costruttiva e che guarda in avanti”.
La parlamentare di Upper Bann Dolores Kelly è stata nominata numero due dell’SDLP.

McDonnell elected new SDLP leader
Alasdair McDonnell has taken over from Margaret Ritchie at the helm of the SDLP after winning the leadership contest at the party annual conference in Belfast.
“This is the proudest moment of my political life,” Dr McDonnell told party delegates at the Ramada Hotel on Saturday.
He saw off the challenge of three party colleagues for the leadership – Patsy McGlone, Alex Attwood and close runner-up Conall McDevitt.
Only 36 votes separated Mr McDonnell and Mr McDevitt in the final count.
Dr McDonnell thanked his challengers and pledged to lead the party to a political revival – he is the second leader to be elected in less than two years, and had finished runner-up in 2009.
He had a stark message to the DUP and Sinn Féin in Saturday’s victory speech.
“We helped arrive at an agreed Ireland in 1998,” he said – referring to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.
“The two parties that are now in power have turned that agreed Ireland and tremendous opportunity into a grubby little deal – they are like Afghan warlords dividing up the spoils.”
He said he would restore the party to its position of relevance.
“For me the task is set,” he told fellow party members.
“You’ve chosen me to lead the recovery and the renaissance of this party.
“I will do it. I want you to enjoy yourselves for the rest of the evening because tomorrow the work will have to start.”
Ms Ritchie announced her plan to step down in September, in the wake of poor general and assembly election results.
First Minister Peter Robinson took to Twitter to congratulate the new SDLP leader.
“Well done Alasdair. Look forward to working with you,” the DUP leader wrote.
Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams said: “I wish Alasdair McDonnell well. I hope the new leader will display a positive, constructive and forward looking attitude.”
Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly was elected the new SDLP deputy leader.
