Alliance Party “disgustato” dai volantini DUP/UUP sulla questione bandiere

L’Alliance Party ha detto che il suo personale ha ricevuto telefonate “offensive e cattive” dopo la distribuzione di un volantino riguardo la politica di esposizione della bandiera dell’Unione

Secondo il volantino Alliance Party si sarebbe schierato con lo Sinn Féin e l’SDLP per fermare l’esposizione della bandiera dell’Unione dalla City Hall di Belfast, tranne che in pochi giorni all’anno.

Circa 40.000 i volantini sono stati distribuiti in un’operazione congiunta svolta da attivisti DUP e UUP.

Maire Hendron, consigliera dell’Alliance Party, si è detta “disgustata” dal volantino.

Ha accusato il DUP, in particolare, di utilizzate “tattiche subdole” in vista del voto in Consiglio comunale sulla questione.

Problema emotivo

Tuttavia, in risposta ai reclami provenienti dall’Alliance Party, il DUP ha detto di non avere “nulla di cui scusarsi”.

L’UUP ha confermato che i suoi consiglieri sono stati coinvolti nella distribuzione dei volantini e che la questione relativa alle bandiere è un problema emotivo per gli unionisti.

I volantini sono stampati utilizzando il giallo, colore distintivo dell’Alliance Party, e includono i numeri telefonici del quartier generale e dell’ufficio di East Belfast.

Nel corso delle ultime due settimane, sono stati consegnati in tutta Belfast, in vista del prossimo dibattito sulla politica delle bandiere che dovrebbe avvenire in Consiglio il mese prossimo.

La consigliere comunale di Alliance Party, Maire Hendron, ha dichiarato: “Sono assolutamente disgustata del livello raggiunto da alcuni dei miei colleghi del Belfast City Council“.

Ha anche chiesto le scuse per le accuse contenute nel foglio.

Importante simbolo

In una dichiarazione, la Henron ha affermato: “Non posso essere più chiara quando dico che Alliance Party non ha costituito alcun patto con Sinn Fein o SDLP sul futuro della bandiera alla City Hall di Belfast.

Ha aggiunto: “Alliance Party ha sempre appoggiato una politica per stabilire i giorni in cui esporre la bandiera dell’Unione sull’edificio municipale.

“Non solo questo è lo status quo a Stormont – dove i parlamentari del DUP non presentano alcun reclamo – ma è in linea con la raccomandazione dell’Equality Commission.

“Crediamo che esporre in alcuni giorni la bandiera la renda un simbolo forte per la nostra città”.

Christopher Stalford, consigliere DUP, ha detto che l’esposizione della bandiera dell’Unione sul pennone della Belfast City Hall è un problema preso molto sul serio da tanta gente.

Facendo riferimento alla prossima votazione, ha detto che la realtà politica e matematica è che Alliance Party potrebbe fare la differenza nella decisione di continuare a far sventolare la bandiera.

Stalford ha aggiunto che sui volantini veniva chiesto di contattare l’Alliance Party “sempre con rispetto”.

Ha espresso stupore per le lagnanze del partito sul fatto di essere contattato dagli elettori che vogliono discutere la sua politica su una questione importante.

Un portavoce dell’UUP ha detto chiunque ha partecipato all’evento del mese scorso per il centenario dell’Ulster Covenant a Stormont avrebbe notato il disappunto mostrato da parte degli astanti per la mancanza della bandiera dell’Unione sugli edifici del Parlamento.

Ha aggiunto che l’UUP desidera ribadire la richiesta che chiunque contatti i politici sulla questione dovrebbe essere sempre rispettoso.

Alliance Party ‘disgusted’ at DUP/UUP flag policy leaflet

The Alliance Party has said its staff have been subjected to “many abusive and nasty” calls after the distribution of a leaflet about Union flag policy.

The leaflet claims Alliance has sided with Sinn Fein and the SDLP to stop the Union flag flying at Belfast City Hall on all but a few days each year.

Up to 40,000 of the leaflets have been distributed in a joint operation carried out by DUP and UUP activists.

Alliance councillor Maire Hendron said she was “disgusted” by the leaflet.

She accused the DUP in particular of “underhand tactics” ahead of a council vote on the issue.

Emotive issue

However, in response to complaints from Alliance, the DUP said it has “nothing to apologise for”.

The UUP has also confirmed its councillors were involved in distributing the leaflets and said flag policy was an emotive issue for unionists.

The leaflets are printed in the Alliance party’s distinctive yellow colours and include the telephone numbers for its headquarters and east Belfast office.

Over the past two weeks, they have been posted through doors across Belfast, ahead of an upcoming debate on flag policy that is due to take place at the council next month.

Alliance Councillor Maire Hendron said: “I am absolutely disgusted at the level some of my counterparts on Belfast City Council have stooped to on this matter.”

She also demanded an apology for the claims contained in the leaflet.

‘Important symbol’

In a statement, she said: “I cannot be clearer when I say the Alliance Party has not formed a pact with Sinn Fein or the SDLP over the future of the flag at Belfast City Hall.

Ms Hendron added: “The Alliance Party has always had a policy of designated days when it comes to flying the Union flag over the City Hall.

“Not only is this the status quo at Stormont – where the DUP’s MLAs make no complaint – but it is in line with the recommendation of the Equality Commission.

“We believe to fly the flag as an important symbol on certain days makes it a stronger emblem for our city.”

DUP councillor Christopher Stalford said the flying of the Union flag outside Belfast City Hall was an issue a lot of people took seriously.

Referring to the upcoming vote, he said the political and mathematical reality was that Alliance could make a difference to whether the flag continues to fly.

‘Dismay’

Mr Stalford added that the leaflets asked anyone contacting the Alliance to be “respectful at all times”.

He expressed astonishment that the party should complain about being contacted by voters who want to discuss its policy on an important issue.

A UUP spokesman said anyone who was at last month’s event to mark the centenary of the Ulster Covenant in the Stormont estate would have noted the dismay shown by those attending at the lack of a Union flag on display at Parliament Buildings.

He added that the UUP wished to reiterate the request that anyone contacting politicians on the issue should be respectful at all times.
