Ancora disordini a Lurgan

More trouble erupts in Lurgan

Fresh trouble erupted in Lurgan on Friday evening.

Lurgan riots, day 2It is understood a vehicle has been set on fire at Lake Street in the town.

Police have advised motorists to avoid the area due to the disturbances.

Translink said the railway line was closed between Lisburn and Portadown until further notice.

On Thursday night, masked gunmen were at the scene of the disturbances which flared in the Kilwilkie estate, and a replica gun was found.

More than five vehicles were hijacked and set on fire in Lurgan.

Trouble also erupted in Craigavon where a lorry was hijacked and set on fire.

Hours earlier, three Lurgan men, who admitted their role in a dissident bomb plot, were jailed for a total of 45 years.

“There are obviously those intent on continuing the violence of last night”, SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly told UTV on Friday evening.

“They were frustrated last night. The police didn’t fall into their trap and they didn’t get to use the petrol bombs and other things they had gathered up, so people would do well to avoid the area.

“There’s always the risk it could escalate into something more serious, and I would hope common sense would prevail and people stay off the board. I would urge those with influence to exercise it.”
