Anthony Thomas Friel si dichiara colpevole per gli esplosivi ritrovati a Derry nel 2012

Friel, presunto membro della Real IRA, ha ammesso di aver posseduto pipe bomb e altri componenti per la loro costruzione

Anthony Thomas Friel si è dichiarato colpevole per il possesso di ordigni esplosivi e di altri componenti con l’intento di mettere in pericolo vite umane.

Il trentunenne di Derry si è anche dichiarato colpevole di possesso per scopo terroristico di una visiera con visore, un mini trapano in kit, punte, un pistola a caldo, vari strumenti e materiale elettrico, berretti, guanti, tute da lavoro, scatole di plastica, istruzioni per timer elettronici Bentley, batterie e nastro adesivo.

In una precedente udienza era stato spiegato come le bombe, i componenti e gli altri oggetti furono scoperti il 21 maggio 2012 in un appartamento in Maureen Avenue a Derry, dopo che la polizia aveva fermato il taxi di Friel e ritrovato tre serie di chiavi dell’appartamento.

Una donna poliziotto ha detto in aula, durante un’udienza per la richiesta respinta di rilascio su cauzione, che l’appartamento era stato utilizzato come magazzino e laboratorio per gli ordigni esplosivi, aggiungendo che era privo dei soliti arredi che si trovano comunemente nelle abitazioni come un letto, cibo e altri effetti personali.

Durante lo stesso raid, la polizia ha perquisito anche un garage nelle vicinanze.

Gli agenti PSNI hanno trovato un mortaio Mark 16, un tubo di lancio e altri oggetti per costruire ordigni in un armadio.

Un avvocato per la Corona ha detto alla corte che la polizia ha ritenuto questi elementi simili a quelli utilizzati dalla Real IRA per gli attacchi contro le forze di sicurezza avvenuti nelle ultime settimane, mentre i Provisional IRA non erano attivi nella zona ormai da otto anni.

“Considerato il materiale trovato a casa di quest’uomo, l’implicazione è che egli è coinvolto con la Real IRA”, ha detto l’avvocato.

Un avvocato difensore ha affermato che il garage dietro la casa non era chiuso e avrebbe potuto essere utilizzato da chiunque.

Ha spiegato che il mortaio non era utilizzabile.

Il suo cliente ha negato di essere entrato nel garage e non ci sono prov forensi contro di lui, ha aggiunto il legale.

Dopo le dichiarazioni di colpevolezza rilasciate venerdì alla Belfast Crown Court, Friel è stato nuovamente rimandato in custodia.

Il giudice David McFarland ha detto che la sentenza dovrebbe arrivare ad aprile, dopo le vacanze di Pasqua, quando le relazioni pre-sentenza saranno state compilate.

DISSIDENT REPUBLICAN FACES JAIL OVER FLAT BOMB FIND

A Real IRA suspect has admitted possessing pipe bombs and component parts for pipe bombs.

Anthony Thomas Friel pleaded guilty on Friday to possessing the explosive devices and component parts with intent to endanger life on 21 May last year.

The 31-year-old, from Gartan Square in Derry/Londonderry, also pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing for a terrorist purpose, on the same date, namely an eye shield and visor, a mini rotary tool kit, drill bits, a heat gun, various tools and electrical material, berets, worksuits, gloves, plastic boxes, Bentley electronic timer instructions, batteries and duct tape.

A previous court heard how the bombs, bomb parts and other items were uncovered in a flat on Maureen Avenue in Derry after police stopped Friel’s taxi and found three sets of keys to the flat.

A police officer told the court in a failed bail hearing that she believed the flat was used for the storage and manufacture of the explosive devices, adding that it was devoid of the usual items one would find in a lived-in property such as a bed, food and other personal effects.

During the same raid, police also searched a nearby garage.

Officers found a Mark 16 mortar, launch tube and firing pack in the garage, along with other bomb-making items inside a filing cabinet.

A Crown lawyer told the court at the time that police believed these items were of the kind used by the Real IRA on the security forces in recent weeks, whereas the Provisional IRA had not been active in these type of attacks in the area in the last eight years.

“Because of the material found at this man’s house the implication is that he is involved with the Real IRA,” the lawyer said.

A defence lawyer said the garage behind the terraced house as unlocked and could have been used by anyone to store the items.

He said that the mortar was not in a usable state.

His client had denied ever using the garage and there was no forensic evidence against him, the lawyer added.

Following his guilty pleas on Friday at Belfast Crown Court,, Friel was remanded back into custody.

Judge David McFarland said he would sentence him in April after the Easter vacation when pre-sentence probation reports had been compiled.
