Il progetto per la costruzione di un ponte pedonale da 13,5 milioni di sterline sopra il fiume Foyle è stato approvato
L’apertura è prevista nel mese di dicembre del prossimo anno.
Poots ha visitato il sito mercoledì e ha detto: “Il ponte aprirà nuove opportunità per lo sviluppo a Ebrington e sarà un altro punto di riferimento importante in questa storica città”.
Il Peace Bridge collegherà la zona di conservazione della Walled City (Città Murata) al sito storico della ex caserma militare di Ebrington sul lato opposto del fiume, che comprende il monumento di Star Fort ed un complesso di edifici disposti intorno alla piazza d’armi.
Il Ponte, progettato dallo studio Wilkinson Eyre Architects già autore del Gateshead Millennium Bridge, abbraccerà il Foyle tra la Guildhall e Ebrington – prima tappa di un importante programma di riqualificazione in quella zona del Waterside.
Il ministro ha detto che la domanda di progettazione è stata valutata in meno di tre mesi.
Ha poi aggiunto: “La velocità di questa decisione mette in evidenza il valore della discussione iniziale con le parti interessate”.
Ilex Chief Executive, Aideen McGinley ha detto: “Ora che abbiamo ottenuto i permessi saremo in grado di far partire il progetto nelle prossime settimane.
“Il Peace Bridge offrirà un punto di riferimento vitale e sarà un’eredità duratura per la città e tutti sono ansiosi di vederne la costruzione”.
Il ponte sarà costruito da Graham (Dromore), uno degli imprenditori ingegneristici più importanti del Nordirlanda, che ha già costruito alcuni dei ponti più conosciuti, tra cui il Foyle Bridge, aperto nel 1984.

Planning for Peace Bridge approved
A planning application for a £13.5m pedestrian bridge across the River Foyle in Derry has been approved.
It is due to open in December next year.
Mr Poots who visited the site on Wednesday said: “The bridge will open up opportunities for development at Ebrington and be another major landmark in this historic city.”
It will link the Walled City conservation area to the historic site of the former Ebrington military barracks on the opposite side of the river which includes the Star Fort scheduled monument and a complex of listed buildings around the parade ground.
The Bridge which was designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects who also designed the award winning Gateshead Millennium Bridge, and it will span the Foyle between the Guildhall and Ebrington – first stage in a major regeneration programme in that area of the Waterside.
The minister said the planning application had been processed in less than three months.
He added: “The speed of this decision highlights the value of pre-application discussion with relevant stakeholders.”
Ilex Chief Executive, Aideen McGinley said: “Now that we have secured planning permission we will be able to make a start on the site in the coming weeks.
“The Peace Bridge will provide a living landmark and lasting legacy for the city and everyone is keen to see construction get under way.”
The bridge will be built by Graham (Dromore), one of Northern Ireland’s largest engineering contractors, who have built some of the most iconic bridges including the Foyle Bridge which opened in 1984.
