Ardoyne 2012: uomo rimandato in custodia per gli spari contro la PSNI

Un quarantasettenne è stato rimandato in custodia accusato del tentato omicidio degli agenti di polizia a North Belfast durante i disordini scoppiati il 12 luglio 2012

Thomas McWilliams, di Ardoyne, è anche accusato di possesso di arma da fuoco con l’intento di uccidere.

Circa venti angenti PSNI furono feriti nel tentativo di riportare la calma ad Ardoyne dopo l’avvio dei riot seguito alla parata contenziosa dell’Orange Order e alla marcia di protesta dei residenti nazionalisti.

DUrante l’udienza presso il tribunale di Belfast la difesa di McWilliams ha chiesto a un investigatore se il suo cliente è accusato di aver sparato durante i disordini. L’agente ha risposto “No”.

Tuttavia, quando a chiesto se la polizia riteneva l’uomo responsabile di aver trasportato via in auto l’arma dal luogo dell’attacco, il poliziotto ha risposto “Sì”.

La vettura era stata prelevata dalla polizia venerdì scorso.

Il poliziotto ha anche spiegato che non ci sono attualmente prove scientifiche per collegare l’accusato all’incidente.

Non è stata avanzata alcuna richiesta per il rilascio con la condizionale.

Mentre McWilliams veniva fatto uscire, ha salutato i suoi sostenitori presenti nella galleria del pubblico.

L’accusato dovrebbe comparire in collegamento video il prossimo 15 agosto.

Man remanded over PSNI murder bid

A 47-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with the attempted murder of police officers in north Belfast during disorder which erupted on the Twelfth of July.

Thomas McWilliams, from Northwick Drive in Ardoyne, is also charged with possession of a firearm with intent to kill.

A number of police officers were injured while trying to restore calm in Ardoyne last Thursday after rioting broke out following a contentious Orange Order march and subsequent protests by local residents.

During the hearing on Wednesday at Belfast Magistrates’ Court, the accused’s defence asked a detective if his client was accused of firing shots to which the detective replied: “No.”

However, when asked if police believed the accused was responsible for driving the weapon away from the scene in a car, the PSNI officer replied: “Yes.”

That vehicle was seized by police last Friday.

The officer also agreed there was currently no forensic evidence linking the accused to the incident.

No application was made for bail.

As Mr McWilliams was led from the dock he saluted supporters who cheered and applauded from the public gallery.

The accused is expected to appear again via videolink on 15 August.
