Armi e munizioni ritrovate a Derry

Mentre indaga sull’autobomba contro la stazione di polizia di Strand Road esplosa 10 giorni fa, la PSNI ha trovato armi e munizioni dopo numerose perquisizioni.

Un fucile replica AK47, un fucile calibro 22, più di 100 caricatori di munizioni, alcuni passamontagna ed un telefono cellulare sono stati portati via per essere analizzati.

Un uomo di 53 anni è ancora sotto interrogatorio.

Philip O’Donnell, 42 anni di Baldrick Crescent, è stato accusato di 12 reati. Venerdì è comparso in tribunale.

O’Donnell è accusato di aver causato l’esplosione, di possesso di esplosivi e di un’arma da fuoco, di aver sequestrato un taxi e del sequestro di persona relativo al tassista.

Inoltre è accusato di essere membro di un’organizzazione illegale, Oglaigh na hEireann. E’ stato rimandato in custodia carceraria.

Durante l’attacco, un tassista è stato costretto a guidare fino alla stazione di polizia, dopo che un ordigno da 200 libbre (90 kg circa) era stato messo sulla sua auto.

La polizia stava ancora facendo evacuare la gente dagli edifici della zona, compreso un fast food da asporto, quando la bomba è esplosa.

Nessuno è rimasto ferito ma alcuni edifici della zona sono rimasti danneggiati, compresi un asilo e appartamenti.

Guns and ammunition found in Derry

Police investigating the bomb attack at Strand Road police station in Derry ten days ago have discovered guns and ammunition following a number of searches.

The PSNI say a replica AK47 rifle, a point22 rifle, over 100 rounds of ammunition, balaclavas and a mobile phone have been removed for forensic examination.

A 53-year-old man is being questioned.

Earlier a man was remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates Court.

Philip O’Donnell, 42, from Baldrick Crescent in the Rosemount area of Derry faced a total of 12 charges when he was brought before the court.

Mr O’Donnell was accused of causing the explosion, possessing explosives and a firearm, hijacking a taxi and falsely imprisoning a taxi driver.

He was also charged with being a member of an illegal organisation, Óglaigh na hÉireann. He was remanded in custody.

During the incident, a taxi driver was forced at gunpoint to drive to the police station after a device carrying 90kg (200 pounds) of explosives was placed in his car.

Police were still clearing people from surrounding buildings, including a fast food takeaway, when the bomb went off.

Nobody was injured but a number of buildings in the area were damaged, including a nursing home and apartments.
