Le fonti di sicurezza dicono che le armi – in gran parte pistole e revolver – sono state collegate all’IRA attraverso esami balistici e documentazione.
Alcune delle armi sono state utilizzate per attacchi prima del cessate-il-fuoco mentre altre sono state collegate attraverso i numeri seriali agli inventari di armi e munizioni fornite dal governo libico al British Foreign Office.
Le scoperte – delle quali la PSNI non intende parlare – avallano le stime dello Special Branch della RUC, secondo cui solo il 60% di tutte le armi dei Provisional IRA erano state distrutte cinque anni fa.
Da aprile 2008 sono state sequestrate più di 170 armi non registrate.

Security sources say the weapons — mainly pistols and revolvers — have been linked to the IRA via ballistic testing and documentation.
Some of the weapons have been traced to pre-ceasefire attacks while others have been matched by their serial numbers to the inventory of guns and ammunition supplied by the Libyan government to the British Foreign Office.
The discoveries — which the PSNI refuses to discuss — support the RUC Special Branch estimation that around 60% of all IRA weapons were decommissioned five years ago.
Since April 2008 more than 170 unregistered guns have been seized by the PSNI.
