L’organismo di comando dell’Irish Republican Army (IRA), l’Army Council, è ancora esistente. Lo riferisce il Segretario di Stato dell’Irlanda del Nord Theresa Villiers ai parlamentari di Westminster
Theresa Villiers stava illustrato le scoperte fatte da un’indagine ufficiale sulle attività paramilitari in Irlanda del Nord alla Casa dei Comuni.
Il rapporto era stato commissionato dopo l’omicidio di Kevin McGuigan avvenuto ad agosto a Belfast.
La polizia ritiene plausibile il coinvolgimento di membri dell’IRA nell’omicidio che ha provocato un terremoto politico.
Lo Sinn Féin continua ad affermare che i Provisional IRA non esistono più e si sono sciolti.
Il rapporto è stato compilato dalla polizia e dai servizi segreti dell’MI 5.
Theresa Villiers ha detto che la valutazione mostra che l’IRA e altri gruppi paramilitari che operavano durante i Troubles sono ancora attivi.
Il Segretario di Stato per l’Irlanda del Nord ha detto che sebbene questi gruppi intendano tornare al terrorismo “non saranno in grado di tornare alla capacità di azione dimostrata al loro picco”.
La Villiers ha detto che, stando a quanto stabilito dalla valutazione di sicurezza, l’Army Council deli Provisional IRA ha “un obiettivo interamente politico”.
Il segretario di Stato per l’Irlanda del Nord ha detto ai parlamentari di Westminster che la valutazione fornita da PSNI e MI5 mostra che l’IRA “non è coinvolto nel tentativo di condurre attacchi terroristici contro lo Stato”.
Ha aggiunto che alcuni singoli membri dell’IRA restano coinvolti in attività criminali, come il contrabbando su larga scala.

The IRA’s ruling body, the ‘army council’ still exists, Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers tells MPs.
Ms Villiers was detailing the findings of an official assessment of paramilitary activity in Northern Ireland to the House of Commons.
The report was commissioned after the murder of Kevin McGuigan Sr in Belfast in August.
The police’s belief that current IRA members may have been involved in the killing led to a political crisis.
Sinn Féin insists that the Provisional IRA has gone away and no longer exists.
The report was compiled by the police and the security service, MI5.
She said the assessment showed the IRA and other main paramilitary groups that operated during the Troubles still existed.
The Northern Ireland secretary said that even if these groups wanted to return to terrorism “they would be unable to resurrect the capability demonstrated at their peak”.
Ms Villiers said the security assessment is that the Provisional IRA’s ‘army council’ had a “wholly political focus”.
The Northern Ireland secretary told MPs the police and MI5 assessment showed that the IRA “is not involved in targeting or conducting terrorist attacks against the state”.
She added that some individual IRA members remain involved in criminal activity, such as large scale smuggling.
