Il quarantanovenne Stephen Matthews è stato arrestato venerdì mattina dalla PSNI.
Altri due uomini, arrestati giovedì, sono stati rilasciati incondizionatamente. Matthews al momento resta in custodia della PSNI.
La polizia sta indagando su diversi attacchi avvenuti nella zona di East Belfast nelle ultime settimane, compreso un attacco esplosivo proprio contro la casa di Matthews.
Già in precedenza, a febbraio, mani ignote avevano sparato contro la casa del presunto leader della UVF. Stephen Matthews sarebbe uno dei responsabili del tentato pogrom contro i nazionalisti di Short Strand dello scorso anno. Per diverse notti centinaia di lealisti scatenarono una vera e propria guerriglia contro la minoranza repubblicana, che difese il proprio quartiere strenuamente.
Le attuali aggressioni ricondurrebbero ad una faida in corso tra i paramilitari lealisti della UVF e un’altra banda criminale.

UVF east Belfast ‘leader’ Stephen Matthews arrested
A man, widely named as the leader of the UVF in east Belfast, has been arrested as part of an investigation into serious crime, including drugs.
Forty-nine-year-old Stephen Matthews was arrested on Friday morning.
Two other men, arrested on Thursday, have been released unconditionally. Mr Matthews remains in custody.
Police have been investigating incidents in the area in recent weeks, including a bomb attack on a house last weekend.
It is understood the incidents were the result of a feud between the UVF and another criminal gang.
They included an alleged murder attempt on Mr Matthews last month.
