Arresto per la morte del lealista Robert Coggles, avvenuta nel 1986

Un uomo è stato arrestato nella zona di Greater Belfast dagli inquirenti, per la morte di un paramilitare lealista

L’uomo, 44 anni, è stato fermato dagli agenti dell’Historical Enquiries Team, che stanno indagando sulla morte di Robert Coggles, avvenuta ad agosto 1986.

Coggles, protestante trentunenne proveniente dalla zona di Ballysillan, North Belfast, venne assassinato dalla squadra punitiva della UVF.

Il suo corpo, parzialmente decomposto, venne ritrovato sul Carr’s Glen, nei dintorni a nord della città. GLi avevano sparato in testa.

Il corpo venne ritrovato dalla polizia in una buca poco profonda, dopo le ricerche. Coggles era morto due settimane prima.

Un uomo che passeggiava con il cane lanciò l’allarme, trovando un dente, macchie di sangue ed una scia che conduceva al luogo di sepoltura, giorni dopo la denuncia dei residenti che avevano dichiarato di aver sentito colpi di arma da fuoco esplosi nelle prime ore della mattina.

In una separata operazione condotta dal Serious Crime Branch della PSNI, un uomo di 60 anni è stato arrestato a East Belfast nel corso delle nuove indagini per l’omicidio di Stanley Close.

Il 65enne venne strangolato nella sua abitazione di Canton Court, nella zona di Willowfield, il 25 agosto 1986.

Il sospettato è stato portato presso la Serious Crime Suite della stazione di polizia di Antrim.

Man held over 1986 murder

A man has been arrested in Greater Belfast by detectives investigating the murder of a man by loyalist paramilitaries more than 20 years ago.

The 44-year-old was detained by officers from the Historical Enquiries Team reinvestigating the murder of Robert Coggles in August 1986.

Mr Coggles, a 31-year-old Protestant from Sunningdale Gardens in north Belfast’s Ballysillan area, is believed to have been killed by a UVF punishment squad.

His partially-decomposed body was found at Carr’s Glen on the northern outskirts of the city. He had been shot in the head.

The body was discovered in a shallow grave after several days of police searches some two weeks after he disappeared.

A man out walking his dog raised the alarm after finding a tooth, bloodstains and a trail of blood leading to the grave several days after people in the area reported hearing shots in the early hours of the morning.

In a separate operation by the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch, a 60-year-old man was arrested in east Belfast as part of a renewed investigation into the murder of Stanley Close.

The 65-year-old was strangled to death at his Canton Court home in the Willowfield area on August 25th 1986.

The suspect was taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite for questioning.
