Un uomo è stato arrestato nel corso della nuova indagine su un omicidio settario del 1976 avvenuto a North Belfast
Paul McNally, 26 anni, fu colpito dopo aver lasciato la sala scommesse Sean Graham all’incrocio tra Brompton Park e Crumlin Road.
Morì in ospedale due giorni dopo.
Secondo la polizia, due uomini armati aprirono il fuoco in un attacco settario casuale contro un gruppo di uomini alle 14:40 del 5 giugno 1976.
McNally e un altro uomo subirono gravi ferite.
Un cinquantacinquenne è stato arrestato lunedì a Belfast dagli agenti del Serious Crime Branch della PSNI, dopo la riapertura dell’indagine in seguito al ricevimento di nuove informazioni.
L’Ispettore Capo Justyn Galloway afferma: “Molto è cambiato negli ultimi 36 anni in molti aspetti della vita, in termini di polizia, politica, aspettative personali e relazionali.
“Faccio appello alle persone che parlarono con la polizia al momento dell’omicidio: contattato la nuova squadra investigativa. CHiedo anche a chi non parlò in precedenza con la polizia di contattare chi sta indagando sull’omicidio di Paul McNally”.
McNally lavorava come idraulico, era sposato e aveva una figlia di 4 anni e un bimbo di cinque mesi.
Una pattuglia dell’esercito che passava dalla zona sparò contro i suoi assassini mentre scappavano dalla scena del crimine in una Ford Cortina gialla, rubata prima dell’attacco dalla zona di Shankill Road.
L’uomo arrestato oggi viene interroato dalla polizia nella stazione di polizia di Antrim.
Continua Galloway: “Apprezzo le sfide della riepertura delle indagini in eventi avvenuti più di 36 anni fa ma ritengo che ci siano persone ad Ardoyne che possono aiutare.
“Chiedo a chi ha informazioni sull’omicidio di Paul di pensare a quello che sanno. Facciano la cosa giusta e parlino con la polizia”.

Arrest over 1976 sectarian murder
A man has been arrested as part of a renewed investigation into a 1976 sectarian murder in north Belfast.
Paul McNally, a 26-year-old father of two, was shot as he left Sean Graham’s bookmakers at the junction of Brompton Park and Crumlin Road.
He died in hospital two days later.
Police believe two gunmen opened fire in a random sectarian attack on a group of men, at around 2.40pm on 5 June, 1976.
Mr McNally and another man suffered serious injuries.
A 55-year-old man was arrested by officers from the PSNI Serious Crime Branch in Belfast on Monday, after the inquiry was re-opened when new information was received.
Detective Chief Inspector Justyn Galloway said: “Much has changed over the past 36 years in many aspects of life, in terms of policing, politics, personal outlooks and relationships
“I would appeal to people who spoke with police at the time of the murder to make contact with the new investigation team. I would also ask those who may not have previously spoken to police to contact detectives investigating Paul McNally’s murder.”
Mr McNally, who worked as a plumber, was married and had a four-year-old daughter and a five-month-old son.
A passing army patrol opened fire on his killers as they fled the scene in a yellow Ford Cortina, which had been hijacked in the Shankill Road area before the attack.
The man who was arrested is being questioned by police in Antrim.
Mr Galloway continued: “I fully appreciate the challenges of renewing an investigation into events which took place more than 36 years ago but I believe there are people in the Ardoyne and elsewhere who can assist.
“I would ask those who have information about Paul’s murder to think about what they know, do the right thing and talk to police.”
