Il ministero della Difesa ha rifiutato di discutere le voci secondo cui uno dei migliori esperti artificieri dell’esercito britannico è stato inviato in Irlanda del Nord per contrastare la minaccia repubblicana
Ci sarebbe anche stato , sempre secondo il quotidiano, un incontro tra militari e addetti alla sicurezza a Belfast per discutere dell’aumento del numero di artificieri da impiegare nella continua campagna di violenza repubblicana.
Il rapporto affermava che l’alto ufficiale deve “pianificare la strategia per combattere l’incremento della violenza da parte dei repubblicani”.
Un portavoce del ministero ha detto al News Letter di non poter rilasciare commenti “su questioni tattiche o operative”.
L’Independent ha riportato la dichiarazione di un “anonimo ufficiale di alto livello” secondo cui il numero di artificieri di stanza in Irlanda del Nord è cresciuto fino allo stesso livello visto alla fine dell’Operazione Banner, terminata nel luglio 2007 dopo 38 anni.
Il giornale ha anche rivelato che specialisti in ordigni esplosivi improvvisati vengono “regolarmente ruotati tra Helmand e l’Ulster” e gli agenti dell’MI5 sono stati spostati dal controllo di militanti islamici a quello dei repubblicani.
Il rapporto è giunto lo stesso giorno in cui 170 alunni sono stati evacuati dalla Crumlin Primary School per un allarme bomba.
Lunedì un alunno della St Comgalls Primary School di Antrim ha raccolto una pipe bomb dal campo giochi scolastico.
Per tale incidente sono responsabili i lealisti.
Army’s top bomb expert ‘sent to Northern Ireland’
THE Ministry of Defence (MOD) has refused to discuss claims that one of the most senior counter-explosives officers in the British military has been sent to Northern Ireland to help combat the republican threat.
It claimed that military and security officials met in Belfast on Tuesday to discuss increasing the number of bomb-disposal officers in the wake of the ongoing campaign of dissident violence.
The report claimed the senior officer is to “plan the strategy to combat the rising tide of violence from dissident republicans”.
An MOD spokesman told the News Letter yesterday that it did not comment “on operational or tactical matters”.
The Independent report quoted an “unnamed senior officer” who said the number of bomb disposal personnel deployed to Northern Ireland has risen to almost the same level seen at the end of the Army’s 38-year military operation here in July 2007.
The paper also claimed that Army IED specialists are now being “regularly rotated between Helmand and Ulster” and MI5 agents have been diverted from monitoring Islamic militants to dissidents.
The report came on the same day that 170 pupils were evacuated from Crumlin Primary School due to a bomb scare.
On Monday, an eight-year-old schoolboy at St Comgall’s Primary School in Antrim picked up a pipe bomb in the school playground.
It is believed loyalists were responsible for that incident.
