Attacco contro la casa dei McDaid a Coleraine

La casa di Kevin McDaid è stata colpita da un attacco settario

Il parlamentare SDLP John Dallat ha riferito di aver saputo dalla polizia che l’abitazione del lavoratore comunitario cattolico è stata una delle due nella zona di Heights ad essere colpite nelle prime ore di martedì.

Dieci persone sono state accusate di aver preso parte alla morte di McDaid avvenuto a maggio; sei di loro per omicidio.

I politici nazionalisti parlano di una incessante campagna di intimidazione dei lealisti per intimidire i testimoni.

Dallat ha detto: “Quest’anno c’è stata una litania di attacchi settari a Coleraine, con la morte di Kevin McDaid come il fatto più noto e orribile.

“Ora abbiamo sentito le ultime disgustose notizie che due abitazioni nel quartieredi Heights, uno delle quali appartenente alla famiglia McDaid, è stata attaccata da delinquenti con lanci di bottiglie”.

Ha aggiunto il parlamentare di East Derry: “I responsabili del lancio di bottiglie contro la casa dei McDaid non sono altro che dei pietosi cretini.

“Non contenti di quanto causato, sono passati a rompere una finestra degli amici dei McDaid”.

Billy Leonard, consigliere shinner di Coleraine, ha chiesto l’iterruzione dell’intimidazione.

“In entrambi i casi sono arrivati con una macchina e conoscevano perfettamente quali case colpire.

“Ci sono giovani ragazzi in queste case e sono stati ovviamente spaventati dagli episodi”.

McDaid venne assassinato e Damien Fleming ferito in maniera grave e lasciato in coma quando i lealisti penetrarono nel quartiere a maggioranza cattolica di Heights dopo la vittoria da parte dei Rangers Glasgow sui Celtic, nel campionato di calcio scozzese.

Leonard ha detto: “Il nome di Kevin McDaid è stato cinicamente cantato dai lealisti ai margini di Heights e i cattolici sono oggetto di abusi verbali quando si trovano semplicemente a fare spesa nel centro cittadino.

“In alcune occasioni i testimoni dell’omicidio McDaid sono stati bersagliati”.

Attack on McDaid family home

The family home of Kevin McDaid has been targeted in a sectarian attack.

SDLP MLA John Dallat said he had been told by police that the home of the catholic community worker was one of two in the Heights area of Coleraine that was targeted in the early hours of Tuesday.

Ten people have been charged over Mr McDaid’s killing in May, including six with the murder.

Nationalist politicians claim there has been a continuing campaign by loyalists to intimidate witnesses.

‘Pitiful’

Mr Dallat said: “This year has seen a litany of sectarian attacks in Coleraine, with the murder of Kevin McDaid being the most notorious and most sickening.

“Now we hear the disgusting news that two homes in the Heights area, one of which was that belonging to the McDaid family, have been targeted by bottle wielding thugs.”

The East Derry MLA added: “Those responsible for hurling Buckfast bottles at the McDaid family home are no more than pitiful cretins.

“Not content with that they then proceeded to family friends of the McDaids and broke a window there.”

Sinn Fein Coleraine councillor Billy Leonard demanded an end to the intimidation.

He said: “In both cases they arrived by car and they knew exactly the homes they wanted to hit.

“There are young children in these houses and they have obviously been frightened by the incidents.”

Mr McDaid was murdered and Damien Fleming critically injured and left in a coma when loyalists stormed the mainly Catholic Heights area after Rangers beat Celtic to the Scottish Premier League football title.

Mr Leonard said: “Kevin McDaid’s name has been cynically chanted by loyalists at the fringes of the Heights and Catholics have been subjected to verbal intimidation when simply in the town centre shopping.

“On some occasions witnesses to Kevin’s murder have been singled out.”
