Attacco contro personale PSNI a Claudy

Per la PSNI ci sarebbe la Real IRA dietro ai due attacchi contro le abitazioni di personale della polizia avvenuti oggi nella Contea di Derry, descritti come “temerari e disperati”

Ci sarebbero voci non confermate della presenza di altri ordigni nella zona. La polizia chiede alla popolazione di essere estremamente vigile.

Un ordigno è esploso nelle prime ore di mercoledì mattina fuori da un’abitazione in Ervey Road di proprietà di un poliziotto cattolico.

Lo scoppio ha provocato danni alla porta d’ingresso dell’abitazione, ma nessuno era all’interno della casa.

In un secondo attacco a Learmount Road, una bomba è stata ritrovata nel giardino dell’abitazione di un dottore che cura i prigionieri mentre si trovano sotto custodia della polizia.

Il dottore, ce lavora come medico forense alla stazione di polizia locale, è il presidente del Foyle Hospice.

Tre uomini – due di 36 anni ed uno di 28 – sono stati arrestati nella zona di Derry, in relazione agli attacchi.

L’allarme sicurezza è ancora in corso.

Stephen Martin, Soprintendente della PSNI, ha riferito a Utv: “Questo poliziotto è un membro della comunità, passa il suo tempo a lavorare per la comunità.

“Sul motivo per cui il dottore è stato attaccato, non riesco a comprendere come possa diventare un obiettivo un medico generico – un uomo che ha lavorato per la comunità per 40 anni”.

Durante i Troubles, ricorda Martin, i dottori erano visti come “neutrali ed indipendenti”.

“Penso sia indicativo della spericolatezza e della temerarietà di questi piccoli gruppi anti-pace, quando possano trovare una ragione per attaccare un dottore”, ha aggiunto.

Thomas Conway, consigliere SDLP per Claudy e presidente del District Policing Partnership di Folye, ritiene responsabili per gli attacchi le formazioni repubblicane.

“Fino ad ora i repubblicani hanno attaccato solamente nei confini della città di Derry e questa è la prima volta in cui si spostano nelle zne di campagna.

“Sebbene gli attacchi contro la casa di qualcuno siano sempre deplorevoli, le zone di campagna sono molto più isolate e quindi sono obiettivi molto più semplici.

“E’ anche preoccupante che i responsabili siano riusciti, ovviamente, ad ottenere informazioni di intelligence riguardo alle abitazioni ed ai movimenti dei loro obiettivi.

Ha quindi aggiunto: “Queste sono azioni deplorevoli. C’è davvero un senso di rabbia nella comunità-

“Condanno completamente questi attacchi e chiedo a chiunque abbia informazioni di passarle alla PSNI”.

Brian Rea, presidente del Policing Board, parla di attacchi “totalmente ingiustificabili”.

“E’ una fortuna che nessuno sia rimasto ucciso o gravemente ferito.

“I responsabili di questi scellerati atti di violenza non possono dare alcun contributo positivo alla nostra società e non riusciranno a distruggere l’enorme processo fatto riguardo alla gestione della polizia in tutte le comunità”, ha proseguito.

Nel frattempo una donna di 36 anni è stata fermata a Derry nel pomeriggio di mercoledì per “presunta attività repubblicana”.

E’ stata arrestata dagli agenti del Serious Crime Branch della PSNI e sta aiutando la polizia.

Claudy bombs ‘reckless’ – PSNI

The PSNI have described two attacks they believe were carried out by the Real IRA on the homes of police personnel in Co Londonderry as “reckless and desperate”.

There are also unconfirmed reports that there may be other devices in the area, police are appealing for the public to be vigilant.

A device exploded outside a property on Ervey Road, Claudy which belongs to a Catholic police officer in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

It caused damage to the front door of the house, but no one was inside at the time.

In a second attack, a bomb has been found in the garden of the home of a doctor who treats prisoners in police custody on Learmount Road.

The GP, who works as a forensic medical officer at local police stations, is the chairman of the Foyle Hospice.

Three men – two aged 36 and one aged 28 – have been arrested in the Derry area in connection with the attacks.

The alert is ongoing.

Chief Superintendant Stephen Martin told UTV: “This police officer is a member of the community, he spends his life serving the community.

“As to why they targeted the doctor, I don’t think I could begin to try and understand how a man who has been a General Practitioner – a man who has given 40 years service to the community – is deemed to be a target.”

Supt Martin said that throughout the Troubles doctors were regarded “as neutral and independent.”

“I think this just is indicative of the recklessness and the desperation of these small anti-peace groups when they can find some rationale to target a doctor of this nature”, he added.

Thomas Conway, SDLP Claudy councillor and Foyle District Policing Partnership Chairman, says he believes that dissidents are responsible.

“Up until now the dissidents have only targeted within the confines of Derry City and this is the first instance where they have moved to rural areas,” he said.

“Whilst an attack on anyone’s home is despicable, rural areas and homes are much more isolated and are softer targets.

“It’s also worrying as those responsible have obviously acquired a degree of intelligence about the homes and movements of their targets.

He added: “These were deplorable actions. There is a real sense of anger in this community.

“I condemn these without question and urge anybody with information to pass it to the PSNI.”

NI Policing Board chair, Brian Rea said the attacks are “totally unjustifiable”.

“It is fortunate that no-one was killed or seriously injured.

“The people who carried out these mindless acts of violence have nothing positive to contribute to our society and will not succeed in destroying the huge progress that has been made in policing across communities,” he said.

Meanwhile, a 36-year-old woman was arrested in Derry on Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of dissident Republic activity.

She was detained by detectives from the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch and is helping police with their enquiries.
