Aumentano attacchi contro i poliziotti in Irlanda del Nord

Il numero degli attacchi contro gli agenti di polizia in Irlanda del Nord stanno aumentando

Nel 2009/10, 3.289 poliziotti sono stati aggrediti. Nel 2007/08 la cifra è stata 2.912, salita l’anno seguente a 2.940.

L’area con il maggior numero di attacchi è North Belfast con 373, seguito da South Belfast con 311, quindi il distretto di Foyle con 283.

Il parlamentare DUP Lord Morrow, presidente del comitato giustizia dell’Assemblea, dice di essere “sconvolto” dalle cifre.

“Non è accettabile in questi giorni e penso ci sia una responsabilità della società nel suo insieme a fornire il loro pieno e incondizionato sostegno alla polizia”, ha affermato.

Lord Morrow ha ricevuto le cifre dopo aver avanzato una richiesta al ministro della giustizia.

“L’area con il minor numero di aggressioni è stato Ballymoney con 27, poi Moyle con 28 e quindi Castlereagh con 30”, ha detto.

“Moyle, sfortunatamente, sta salendo nella graduatoria. Nel 2007/08 ci sono stati 9 assalti, quasi raddoppiati nel 2008/09 e poi di nuovo nel 2009/10.

“La tendenza generale, comunque, con poche eccezioni, mostra un aumento delle aggressioni.

“Sono ansioso di comprendere come queste questioni sono esaminate attraverso i tribunali, e ho sottoposto un’ulteriore domanda al ministro della giustizia in questo senso”.

Police officer attacks increasing

The number of attacks on police officers across Northern Ireland is on the rise.

In 2009/10, 3,289 officers were assaulted. In 2008/09 the figure was 2,912, rising to 2,940 in 2008/09.

The area with the most attacks was north Belfast with 373, followed by south Belfast which had 311, then the Foyle district with 283.

DUP MLA Lord Morrow, chair of the Assembly’s justice committee, said he was “horrified” at the figures.

“It’s not acceptable in this day and age and I think there is a responsibility on society as a whole to give their full and unqualified support to the police,” he said.

Lord Morrow received the figures after submitting a question to the justice minister.

“The area of lowest assaults was Ballymoney with 27, then Moyle with 28 and Castlereagh with 30,” he said.

“Moyle unfortunately is sliding up the scale. In 2007/08 it had nine assaults, this almost doubled in 2008/09 and then again for 2009/10.

“The general trend however, with a few exceptions, shows an increase of assaults.

“I am keen to learn how these matters were dealt with through the courts, and have submitted a further question to the minister of justice to this effect.”
