Bambini testimoni di gambizzazione punitiva

Alcuni bambini, anche di soli 10 anni, sono stati testimoni di una punizione a Strabane avvenuta domenica sera

Un giovane di circa 20 anni è in condizioni stabili dopo che gli hanno sparato alle gambe nella zona di Springhill Park, intorno alle 20:15 di domenica.

Paul Gallagher, lavoratore comunitario, ha detto che la vittima è stata portata nel quartiere a bordo di un’atomobile, poi gli hanno sparato due volte alle gambe.

“C’erano alcuni ragazzi in giro. Hanno visto il giovane ferito gettato a terra.

“Ho ricevuto una telefonata e mi sono recato nella zona, dove ho visto il giovane con ferite da arma da fuoco alla gamba.

“Piovigginava. Alcuni vicini anno sono usciti e l’hano avvolto in una coperta fino all’arrivo dell’ambulanza”.

Gallagher riferisce anche di aver visto il padre del giovane, in giro alla ricerca del figlio, prima di ritrovarlo ferito.

Per il lavoratore comunitario la punizione sarebbe compiuta dal RAAD (Republican Action Against Drugs).

“Da un aspetto comunitario, voglio dire che i gruppi di vigilantes non funzionano. Non sono mai funzionati in passato e non lo faranno adesso.

“Quello che dobbiamo fare è cercare di avere un dialogo con queste persone per vedere se possiamo fermare tutto questo”.

Children moved away from site of Strabane shooting

Children, some as young as 10, witnessed the aftermath of a shooting in Strabane on Sunday.

A man, believed to be 20 years old, is in a stable condition after he was shot in the legs in the Springhill Park area at about 2015 GMT.

Community worker, Paul Gallagher, said the victim had been taken into the estate in a car and shot twice in the legs.

“There was some kids around. They saw the young fellow lying on the ground.

“I got a call and went over to the estate and saw the young fellow with bullet wounds to the leg.”

“It was pouring with rain. Some of the neighbours came over and wrapped him in a blanket until the ambulance came.”

Mr Gallagher said he also saw the man’s father, who had been searching for his son, before finding him shot.

He said he believed that the shooting was carried out by the vigilante group, RAAD (Republican Action Against Drugs).

“From a community aspect I would like to say vigilantism won’t work. It’s never worked in the past and it won’t work now.

“What we need to do is to is engage in some dialogue with these people to see if we can get this stopped.”

The police have appealed for information.
