Il proprietario Paul Gillen ha riferito che solo l’attenzione dei vicini e l’efficienza del Fire Service ha salvato l’edificio dalla completa distruzione.
L’attacco è il secondo in pochi mesi, dopo il lancio di pipe bomb da parte di lealisti contro il locale ad inizio marzo. Allora, come adesso, l’attacco è stato seguito dal danneggiamento contro la St Mary Primary School sempre a Greencastle.
Nell’incidente della scorsa settimana le telecamere a circuito chiuso hanno mostrato un uomo che cerca di appiccare fuoco all’edificio intorno alle 3 di venerdì mattina. La ripresa fa vedere l’uomo mentre attraversa il muro posteriore e dà fuoco ai bidoni. Il nastro è stato consegnato alla polizia che cerca di migliorare le immagini.
Il fuoco ha causato lo scioglimento dei bidoni, con conseguente bruciatura del retro del pub.
“Tu vedi questo ragazzo muovere un cilindro di gas e dargli fuoco ma non è riuscito a gestirlo”, dice Paul. “Abbiamo ricevuto la chiamata della società che ha installato l’allarme intorno alle 3:15. Quando è giunta la chiamata secondaria abbiamo capito che stava succedendo qualcosa di grosso. I vicini sono stati grandi, hanno visto le fiamme e sono andati subito dai pompieri, così quando siamo giunti al locale la squadra di soccorso era già all’opera.
“Hanno reagito con prontezza e solo per il loro modo veloce di pensare, aggiunto alle nostre porte taglia fuoco, avrebbe potuto essere molto peggio, mi ha riferito il comandante dei pompieri.
“Il bar serve la comunità ed un attacco contro il locale è un attacco alla comunità stessa. Non riesco a capire perché siamo diventati dei bersagli”.

Catholic bar targeted again

The attack is the second in a matter of months after loyalists pipebombed the premises at the start of March. Then, as now, the attack was followed by an attack on the nearby St Mary’s Primary School in Greencastle.
In last week’s incident CCTV footage shows a man trying to set fire to the building at around 3am on Friday morning. The footage shows the man climbing over the back wall and setting fire to bins. That footgae is now with police who are enhancing the images.
The fire caused the bins to melt resulting in severe scorch damage to the back of the pub.
“You can see the guy tries to move a gas cylinder and set that on fire but he doesn’t manage it,” Paul said. “We got the call from the alarm company about 3.15am. When the secondary call came that’s when we knew something major was going on. The neighbours were great, they seen the flames and got onto the Fire Brigade straightaway, so when we arrived the fire crew were already on the scene.
“They reacted very quickly and only for their quick thinking, plus we have the proper fire doors, it could have been a lot worse – thats what the fire chief told me.
“The bar is serving the local community and an attack on the bar is an attack on the local community. It doesn’t make any sense why we should be targeted.”
