Belfast: aggiornato il caso contro Gerry McGeough

Il processo contro un veterano repubblicano, accusato del tentato omicidio di un soldato della UDR 30 anni fa, è stato aggiornato in attesa dell’udienza di un ricorso legale presentato da McGeough

Gli avvocati di Terence Gerard McGeough, detto Gerry, 51 anni, stanno cercando di ottenere la remissione del processo per un abuso processuale e la loro istanza sarà analizzata la prossima settimana.

Venerdì, presso la Belfast Crown Court, il giudice Stephens ha detto di voler essere tenuto informato sul progresso del ricordo e ha stabilito un aggiornamento dell’udienza.

E’ stato raccontato in tribunale come McGeough venne colpito al petto Samuel John Brush, quando il soldato part-time e postino a tempo pieno si ribellò all’attacco compiuto da due uomini il 13 giugno 1981 a Aughnacloy.

McGeough nega il tentato omicidio di Brush e di aver posseduto due revolver Colt, usati durante l’attacco.

Ha negato anche l’appartenenza all’Irish Republican Army nel periodo tra gennaio 1975 e giugno 1981.

Insieme a lui, sul banco degli imputati, siede Vincent McAnespie, 47 anni di Aughnacloy. L’uomo nega di aver posseduto armi e munizioni con l’intento di colpire qualcuno.

Si dice estraneo anche all’accusa di aver impedito l’arresto di McGeough nascondendo le armi.

UDR soldier murder case adjourned

The trial of a veteran republican accused of trying to murder a UDR soldier 30 years ago has been adjourned pending the hearing of a legal application to have the case against him thrown out.

Lawyers for Terence Gerard McGeough, 51, are seeking to have the case dismissed through an abuse of process order and their application will be heard next week.

At Belfast Crown Court on Friday Mr Justice Stephens said he wanted to be kept informed about the progress of the application and scheduled an update for a week’s time.

The court has heard that McGeough was shot in the chest by the intended victim Samuel John Brush, as the part-time soldier and full time postman fought back when he was attacked near Aughnacloy in County Tyrone by two men on 13 June 1981.

McGeough from Carrycastle Road, Gortmerron, Dungannon is denying the attempted murder of Mr Brush and possessing two Colt revolvers used in the attack.

He is also denying two counts of IRA membership between January 1975 and June 1981.

Alongside him in the dock is Vincent McAnespie, 47, from Aghabo Close in Aughnacloy who denies possessing the guns and ammunition with intent to endanger life and under suspicious circumstances.

He also denies a further charge of impeding the apprehension of McGeough by hiding the guns.
