L’interfaccia tra Lower Newtownards Road e la zona a prevalenza nazionalista di Short Strand è stata teatro di importanti disordini negli ultimi due mesi.
Il consigliere del DUP Adam Newton si è opposto alla mozione per il cartello bilingue, e aveva proposto il rigetto dell’idea. Ma il suo emendamento è stato respinto dai voti di Sinn Féin, SDLP e Alliance Party.
Perorando l’emendamento di Newton, l’assessore DUP Christopher Stalford ha esortato consiglieri a votare contro il cartello, evidenziando le forti tensioni nell’interfaccia Lower Newtownards/Short Strand.
Il consigliere Stalford ha anche accusato lo Sinn Féin di “marcare il territorio” con i segnali stradali, come ha detto lo Sinn Féin riguardo ai lealisti e alle bandiere.
Niall O Donnghaile, ex sindaco e consigliere Sinn Fein, ha detto di non vedere motivi per l’emendamento, considerato che due terzi dei residenti della strada sono favorevoli al cartello, come viene richiesto dalla politica comunale per l’esposizione di un cartello bilingue.
Il consigliere dell’Alliance Party Mervyn Jones ha spiegato che il cartello stradale sarà eretto in Madrid Street alla fine di Bryson Street e si è detto contento di sostenere la proposta.
L’emendamento è stato respinto con 29 voti a 19.
Saranno quattro le strade di Belfast che riceveranno segnali stradali bilingue. Infatti anche Artana Street, Balfour Avenue e Dromara Street saranno dotati di cartelli bilingue.
Almeno due terzi dei residenti di una strada devono essere a favore di un cartello in irlandese prima che possa essere proposta la realizzazione.
C’era una massiccia presenza della polizia al di fuori della Belfast City Hall mentre avveniva la riunione consiliare, ma solo un piccolo numero di manifestanti ha dato luogo a una dimostrazione contro la decisione del Consiglio Comunale di interrompere l’esposizione della bandiera dell’Unione sui pennoni della City Hall.
La bandiera dell’Unione adesso viene esposta solamente per 20 giorni, invece che tutto l’anno.

Vote to erect Irish sign at interface
The lower Newtownards Road interface with the mainly nationalist Short Strand area has been the scene of major violence over the last two months.
DUP councillor Adam Newton opposed the dual language street sign motion, and proposed instead that the idea be rejected. But his amendment was voted down by Sinn Fein, SDLP and Alliance councillors.
Seconding Councillor Newton’s amendment, DUP Alderman Christopher Stalford urged councillors to vote against the sign, pointing out the high tensions at the lower Newtownards/Short Strand interface.
Councillor Stalford also accused Sinn Fein of “marking out territory” with street signs, as he said Sinn Fein accused loyalists of doing with flags.
Sinn Fein councillor Niall O Donnghaile said he did not see the reason for the amendment as two thirds of residents on the street are in favour of the sign, as is demanded by council policy for a dual language sign to be erected.
Alliance councillor Mervyn Jones said as the street sign will only be erected on the Madrid Street end of Bryson Street, he was content to back the proposal.
The amendment was defeated by 29 votes to 19.
In total four streets in Belfast will now receive dual language street signs. Artana Street, Balfour Avenue and Dromara Street will also get the street signs.
At least two thirds of the residents on a street must be in favour of an Irish Street sign before it can be proposed.
There was a heavy police presence outside Belfast City Hall as the meeting took place, but only a very small number of protesters turned up to stage a demonstration against the decision of the council in December to stop flying the Union flag all year round from City Hall.
The Union flag now flies on 20 statutory days instead of all year round.
