La polizia sta svolgendo indagini sulle immagini di una banda armata che posa accanto ad un graffito in cui si minaccia di crocifiggere i cattolici
È un’immagine che ha provocato scompiglio in molte parti dell’Irlanda del Nord.
L’immagine del graffito è stata condivisa sui social network lunedì pomeriggio. Sarebbe stata scattata vicino alla zona nazionalista di St James e al Royal Victoria Hospital.
La sigla “VTOT” che firma il graffito starebbe ad indicare “Village Team On Tour” (La squadra di Village in tour), un riferimento ad una banda con base nella zona ultra lealista di Village, a South Belfast.
Le undici persone ritratte, tutte a volto coperte, brandiscono grosse mazze e posano accanto al graffito che recita “I cattolici (taigs è un dispregiativo per indicare chi è di fede cattolica) saranno crocifissi”.
L’Ispettore Declan White ha detto: “La polizia sta indagando sulle immagini comparse sui social network.
“Faccio appello a chiunque abbia informazioni di contattare la PSNI a Strandtown oppure Crime Stoppers in forma anonima”.
L’immagine è stata condivisa sui social media con molta preoccupazione per il messaggio che viene visto mentre migliaia di persone si sono recate a Belfast per il Tall Ships Festival.
Nel frattempo alcuni utenti dei social network, che si sono identificati come protestanti, hanno scritto sulla pagina Facebook del Belfast Telegraph esprimendo il loro disgusto e la rabbia.
Un utente ha detto: “A tutti i cattolici che leggono. Per favore, per favore non credete che ogni protestante la pensi in questo modo. NO! Oggi questo mi fa vergognare di essere uno di loro”.
Il commento ha ricevuto oltre 1.000 Like e centinaia di risposte. Questo sentimento è stato riproposto anche da molti altri utenti che si definivano protestanti.
L’utente ha aggiunto: “Odio pensare che potrei essere associato a questa feccia. Ho cresciuto i miei figli facendogli capire che siamo tutti esseri umani, abbiamo tutti il sangue rosso e i gli organi sono tutti nello stesso posto.
“Volevo insegnare loro che l’essere umano è più importante della religione nella quale siamo cresciuti. Non riesco a capire perché gli altri non possono fare lo stesso”.
Molti utenti hanno rassicurato il protestante, dicendogli che “non c’è bisogno di vergognarsi”.
In una delle tante repliche si legge: “Sei una persona che vale e non devi chiedere scusa per le azioni di questi animali”.
Un altro ha detto: “È bello vedere la maggioranza delle persone unite nei loro punti di vista e nella necessità di allontanarsi da tutto questo odio. Questo è il paese in cui voglio vivere”.
Un lettore ha commentato: “Ho un sacco di amici protestanti e quando li guardo non vedo la religione, vedo amici”.
Un altro utente ha detto che le persone immortalate nella foto erano “patetici ragazzini che non hanno la minima idea di come sia il mondo reale e cercano di giocare a fare i gangster”.

Police are probing images of an armed gang posing next to graffiti threatening to crucify catholics in Belfast.
It’s an image which sent a chill right through Northern Ireland.
An image of the graffiti was shared on social media on Monday afternoon which appears to show the graffiti near the nationalist St James area and the Royal Victoria Hospital.
It’s understood ‘VTOT’ stands for Village Team On Tour, in reference to a gang based in the staunchly loyalist area of south Belfast.
A masked gang clutching large bats can be seen in the picture beside the graffiti which reads “taigs will be crucified”.
Detective Inspector Declan White said: “Police are currently investigating images that have appeared on social media.
“I would appeal to anyone who has any information about this incident to contact police at Strandtown on the non-emergency number 101. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
The image was shared on social media with many voicing concern at the message being seen as thousands of people descended on the city over the weekend for the Tall Ships festival.
Meanwhile social media users, who identified themselves as being Protestant, have taken to the Belfast Telegraph’s Facebook page to express their disgust and anger.
One user said: “To all Catholics reading this. Please please never believe that every Protestant thinks this way. We don’t!! This makes me ashamed to be one today.”
The comment has received over 1,000 likes at the time of writing and hundreds of replies. The sentiment was echoed by many other users who also identified themselves as Protestants.
The user added: “I would absolutely hate to think I’d be associated with such scum. I brought my own children up to understand that we are all human beings, we bleed red blood and our organs are all in the same place.
“I wanted to teach them that the human being was more important than the religion they were brought up in. I just don’t understand why others can’t do the same.”
Many users assured the commenter that ‘there is no need to feel ashamed’.
One of the many replies said: “You are a credit to yourself and your parents and you don’t have to apologise for the actions of these animals.”
Another said: “Great to see the vast majority on here all united in their views and need to move away from all this hatred. This represents the type of country I want to live in!”
One reader commented: “I have a lot of Protestant friends. When I look at them I don’t see religion – I see friends.”
Another user said that those posing in the photo were “pathetic, little boys, who haven’t got a clue about the real world, trying to play gangster”.
