Un uomo di 46 anni è stato arrestato dopo gli spari contro un’automobile della polizia avvenuti il giorno di Natale a North Belfast
La polizia aveva risposto ad una chiamata riguardante un uomo aggredito nella zona di Highfern Gardens intorno alle 21:40.
Gli agenti stavano controllando l’esatto luogo in cui intervenire, quando il presunto assalitore è uscito da una casa nella zona di Heath Lodge Close, puntando una pistola contro l’auto della PSNI prima di aprire il fuoco.
Nessun agente di polizia è rimasto ferito nel corso dell’incidente.
Poco tempo dopo l’uomo è stato arrestato con il sospetto di tentato omicidio, aggressione, minacce di uccidere, possesso di un’arma da fuoco. Nel corso di una perquisizione sono state ritrovate munizioni ed una pistola.

L’Assistente Comandante della Polizia Mark Hamilton ha detto: “L’incidente dell’altra sera sottolinea i rischi che corrono gli agenti di polizia 365 giorni l’anno lavorando per tenere al sicuro la gente.
“Per fortuna gli agenti in auto non sono rimasti feriti, ma avremmo potuto dover affrontare una situazione ben peggiore.
“Voglio prendere l’opportunità di mettere nero su bianco il mio apprezzamento per il coraggio e la professionalità dei poliziotti e chiedo ad eventuali testimoni di contattare la stazione di polizia di Musgrave”.

Man held after shots fired at police in Belfast
A 46-year-old man has been arrested after shots were fired at a police car in north Belfast on Christmas Day.
Police had responded to a report of a man being assaulted in the Highfern Gardens area at around 9.40pm.
Officers were in the process of locating the alleged attacker in the Heath Lodge Close area, when he is believed to have come out of a house and pointed a gun at a police car before opening fire.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The man was arrested a short time later on suspicion of attempted murder, common assault, threats to kill and possession of a firearm and a gun and ammunition were recovered in a search.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton said: “Last night’s incident underlines the risks police officers face 365 days a year working to keep people safe.”
“Fortunately the officers in the car weren’t hurt, but we could have been looking at a very different situation this morning.
“I would like to take this opportunity to put on record my appreciation for the courage and professionalism of the officers and would appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact detectives at Musgrave Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.”
