L’ex hunger striker parlerà durante la principale commemorazione per i 100 anni dall’Easter Rising 1916 (la Rivolta di Pasqua del 1916, ndt) che si terrà il lunedì dell’Angelo (28 marzo 2016, Ndt).
Bernard Fox, repubblicano di Belfast, nel 1981 ha fatto lo sciopero della fame per 33 giorni ed è stato condannato ad un totale di 22 anni come prigioniero dell’IRA durante il conflitto nordirlandese.
Già nel 2007 Bernard Fox era stato chiamato da éirígí per parlare al 90° anniversario della morte di Thomas Ashe, deceduto durante lo sciopero della fame.
Nel 2013 un tribunale stabilì che l’utilizzo della pratica di “stop and search” contro Bernard Fox da parte della PSNI non era legale.
Alla commemorazione dell’Easter Rising ci sarà anche la partecipazione dell’ex prigioniero repubblicano Liam McCotter.
Un’altra oratrice all’evento di éirígí sarà Sharon Pickering, nativa di South Derry.
La parata, organizzata dall’Irish Republican Commemoration Committee, iniziarà vicino all’ex abitazione di uno dei leader del 1916 James Connolly, in Falls Road a West Belfast, prima di marciare verso l’Harbinson plot nel cimitero di Milltown dove si terranno i discorsi dei repubblicani.
Un portavoce dell’Irish Republican Commemoration Committe ha detto: “Cento anni dopo il 1916, è una triste realtà che le visioni, aspirazioni e obiettivi di chi ha dato la propria vita (nell’Easter Rising) devono ancora essere raggiunte”.

Former IRA hunger striker to speak at Eirigi 1916 event
A FORMER IRA hunger striker will give the oration at the main Eirigi commemoration to mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising.
Belfast republican Bernard Fox spent 33 days on hunger strike in 1981and served a total of 22 years as an IRA prisoner during the Troubles.
Previously he spoke at an Eirigi commemoration in 2007 to mark the 90th anniversary of the death of hunger striker Thomas Ashe.
In 2013 a court ruled that the use of some of ‘stop and search’ powers on Mr Fox by the PSNI was unlawful.
The parade will also be addressed by former republican prisoner Liam McCotter.
South Derry native Sharon Pickering is also expected to speak at the event which will be held on Easter Monday.
Organised by the Irish Republican Commemoration Committee, the parade will start close to the former Falls Road home of 1916 leader James Connolly in Belfast before making its way to Milltown cemetery where the main commemoration will be held at the Harbinson plot.
A spokesman for the Irish Republican Commemoration Committee said: “One hundred years after 1916, it is a stark but inescapable reality that the vision, aspirations and objectives of those who gave their lives have still to be achieved.”
