Billy Hutchinson nuovo leader del Progressive Unionist Party

Sabato, nel corso dell’assemblea annuale, il PUP ha eletto Billy Hutchinson numero uno del partito

L’ex prigioniero UVF, che perse il suo seggio in Assemblea nel 2003, fu condannato all’ergastolo per aver uccisi due cattolici a Falls Road nel 1974.

La sua nomina segue la decisione di Brian Ervine di dimettersi a giugno di quest’anno, dopo la mancata conquista del seggio di East Belfast nelle elezioni per l’Assemblea di Stormont.

Ervine disse che la ragione principale del suo abbandono era il bisogno di tornare a lavorare.

Brian Ervine fu nominato leader nell’ottobre 2010, subito dopo le dimissioni di Dawn Purvis dalla guida del partito ultralealista, avvenute in seguito all’omicidio di Bobby Moffett, avallato dai leader UVF.

Hutchinson elected PUP leader

The PUP has elected Billy Hutchinson as its new leader at the party’s annual conference on Saturday.

The former UVF prisoner, who lost his assembly seat in 2003, was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing two Catholic men on the Falls Road in 1974.

His appointment as leader follows Brian Ervine’s decision to step down in June of this year, after the party’s failure to win a seat in East Belfast in the Assembly elections.

Mr Ervine said the main reason for resigning was his need to return to employment.

He was elected as leader in October 2010 in the wake of Dawn Purvis’s resignation after the UVF murder of Bobby Moffett.
