Liam Hughes, di Bawnmore, aveva portato i suoi due figli, Ché di cinque anni e Keeley di tre, per l’annuale commemorazione della Bloody Sunday di domenica a Derry, insieme ad altre persone del luogo.
Durante il loro ritorno a casa, domenica sera, la polizia è salita sul treno a Coleraine dicendo che stavano rispondendo una denuncia per disordini e hanno lanciato il gas lacrimogeno nella carrozza. Un certo numero di persone sono state poi costrette a lasciare il treno prima di essere autorizzate nuovamente a risalirvi.
Il trentunenne ha detto che il giorno di svago della sua famiglia è stato rovinato dall’incidente.
“Siamo giunti a Coleraine e circa 15 agenti di polizia sono saliti e hanno iniziato a spruzzare lo Spray CS e a trascinare la gente fuori dal treno. Non potevo crederci, stavano usando lo spray a pochi posti di distanza da dove i miei figli erano seduti.
“Poi tutti siamo stati costretti a scendere dal treno ed una ragazza che conosco si è presa cura del mio piccolo bimbo mentre io ho tenuto vicino la mia bambina. Era un pandemonio. Ad un certo punto ho perso i miei figli, è stato terribile”.
La famiglia in seguito ha ricevuto il permesso di rientrare sul treno e tornare a casa, ma Liam ha detto che la vicenda ha colpito molto i suoi due figli.
“Ero davvero preoccupato per il gas lacrimogeno nei loro occhi, così il giorno dopo li ho portati dal dottore e per fortuna stanno bene. Ma fanno un sacco di domande e sono impauriti”.
Hughes ha intenzione di presentare una denuncia al Police Ombudsman.
“Ho un appuntamento fissato con il mio avvocato e penso di fare una denuncia. Hanno avuto la mano pesante e usato forza eccessiva. Hanno spruzzato questo gas a pochi metri da dove si potevano vedere i due bambini piccoli. Sono stati imperdonabili”.
Una portavoce della PSNI ha confermato che domenica sono stati chiamati per intervenire sul treno. Un uomo di 62 anni ed uno di 40 anni dovranno comparire presso il North Antrim Magistrates Court il 23 febbraio, accusati di una serie di reati tra cui comportamento disordinato e assalto alla polizia. Non sono collegati al signor Hughes. Ha inoltre confermato che una serie di persone estranee ai disordini sono stati spostati in un’altra carrozza.
Cops storm Bloody Sunday train
Bawnmore man Liam Hughes had taken his two children, five year old Ché and three year old Keeley, to the annual Bloody Sunday commemoration in Derry on Sunday along with a number of other local people.
During their return home on the train on Sunday evening police entered the train at Coleraine saying they were responding to a disturbance and deployed CS spray in the carriage. A number of people were then forced to leave the carriage before being allowed back on.
The 31-year old said the family day out was destroyed by the incident.
“We got to Coleraine and about 15 police officers got on and started spraying the CS spray and dragging people off the train. I couldn’t believe it, they were spraying it just a few seats away from where my kids were sitting.
“Then we all were forced off the train and a girl I know had to take my wee boy while I got my wee girl off. It was pandemonium. I lost my kids at one point there was that much going on, it was terrible.”
The family were later allowed back on the train and returned home, however Liam said the incident has affected his two children.
“I was really worried about the CS spray in their eyes so I took them to the doctor the next day and thankfully they are ok. But they’ve been asking me about it a lot and they are afraid from it.”
He said he plans to make a complaint to the Police Ombudsman.
“I have an appointment set up with my solicitor and plan to make a complaint. They were completely heavy handed and forceful. They sprayed this spray yards from where they could see two young children were. It was inexcusable.”
A spokeswoman for the PSNI confirmed they were called to the train on Sunday. A 62 year old man and a 40 year old man are expected to appear at North Antrim Magistrates Court on February 23rd charged with a number of offences including disorderly behaviour and assault on police. They are not connected to Mr Hughes. She also confirmed a number of people unconnected to the disorder were moved to another carriage.
