Bloody Sunday Inquiry: Le famiglie felici per la “giornata storica”

Le famiglie del Bloody Sunday sono uscite trionfalmente dalla Guildhall a Derry dopo la pubblicazione del Rapporto Saville sulla morte di civili inermi nel 1972.

Tredici persone furono uccise durante una marcia i diritti civili nella zona Bogside di Derry, il 30 gennaio 1972. Un uomo morì in seguito per le ferite riportate.

I parenti sventolano una copia dell’imponente relazione di Lord Saville mentre ascoltavano il discorso del Primo Ministro alla House of Commons (Camera dei Comuni).

Michael McKinney, il cui fratello di 27 anni venne ucciso, ha detto:

“Mio fratello è stato ucciso da paracadutisti durante il Bloody Sunday. Questa è una giornata storica per Derry”.

“Oggi l’attesa è giunta alla fine”.

La prima inchiesta sui fatti della Domenica di Sangue, supervisionata dal Lord Chief Justice Widgery, fu pubblicata nel mese di aprile 1972.

Il Rapporto Widgery effettivamente esonerò dalla colpe i paracadutisti, concludendo che spararono per legittima difesa contro uomini armati di bombe e altre armi.

Oltraggiati dagli accertamenti, descritti come una “copertura”, le famiglie delle vittime del Bloody Sunday lanciarono una campagna per la richiesta di una seconda indagine. Il loro desiderio fu esaurito nel 1998, quando il Primo Ministro Tony Blair annunciò la nuova inchiesta, presieduta da Lord Saville.

Tony Doherty, il cui padre Paddy Doherty venne ucciso vicino ai Rosville Flats, ha dichiarato:

“Le vittime sono state vendicate”.

“Il reggimento paracadutisti è caduto in disgrazia… le loro medaglie d’onore devono essere ritirate”.

“La grande menzogna di Widgery è stata messa a nudo”.

William Nash,19 anni, fu ucciso da un solo colpo al petto.

I resoconti dei testimoni oculari affermano che Nash era disarmato e stava andando in aiuto di qualcun altro quando fu colpito a morte. Sua sorella Kate Nash ha affermato:

“Sappiamo che era innocente, lo abbiamo sempre saputo e ora anche il mondo lo sa”.

Jim Wray aveva 22 anni. Fu colpito due volte. Il primo proiettile viaggiava “superficialmente” da destra a sinistra attraverso il suo corpo, il secondo entrò nella sua schiena e viaggiava da destra a sinistra.

Testimoni oculari hanno detto Wray era stato colpito e ferito. Poi è stato ucciso, da distanza ravvicinata, mentre giaceva a terra. La sua famiglia ha detto:

“E’ stato deliberatamente ucciso. Questa indagine ha rivendicato la famiglia Wray e ancor più la gente di Derry. Abbiamo sempre saputo la verità”, la sua famiglia ha affermato.

“Jim era” innocente.

“Jim è stato assassinato”.

Families welcome ‘historic day’

Bloody Sunday families came out of the Guildhall in Derry to triumphant applause following the publication of the Saville report into the deaths of unarmed civilians in 1972.

Thirteen people were shot dead at a civil rights march in the Bogside area of Derry on 30 January 1972.

Relatives waved a copy of Lord Saville’s mammoth report as they listened to the Prime Minister’s speech in the House of Commons.

Michael McKinney, whose 27-year-old brother was shot dead, said:

“My brother was murdered by paratroopers on Bloody Sunday. This is a historic day for Derry”.

“Today the waiting has come to an end”.

The first inquiry into the events of Bloody Sunday, overseen by Lord Chief Justice Widgery, was published in April 1972.

Widgery’s report effectively exonerated the paratroopers, concluding that they had fired in self-defence against men armed with bombs and weapons.

Outraged by findings they described as a “whitewash”, the Bloody Sunday families launched a campaign for a second inquiry. They got their wish in 1998 when Prime Minister Tony Blair announced the new investigation, chaired by Lord Saville.

Tony Doherty, whose father Paddy Doherty was shot dead near Rosville Flats on Bloody Sunday said:

“The victims have been vindicated”.

“The parachute regiment have been disgraced…their medals of honour have to be removed”.

“Widgery’s great lie has been laid bare”.

19 year old William Nash was killed by a single shot to his chest.

Eyewitness accounts state that Nash was unarmed and was going to the aid of someone else when he himself was shot. His sister Kate Nash said:

“We know he was innocent, we’ve always known and now the world knows”.

Jim Wray was 22 he was shot twice, the first bullet travelled ‘superficially’ from right to left across his body, the second bullet entered his back and travelled from right to left.

Eyewitnesses said Wray was shot and wounded and then was shot dead, from close range, while he lay on the ground. His family said:

“He was deliberately shot. This inquiry has vindicated the Wray family and much more so the people of Derry. We always knew the truth”, his family said.

“Jim was innocent”.

“Jim was murdered”.
