Bloody Sunday: rimossi ultimi fori di proiettili a Derry

Last Bloody Sunday bullet holes to be removed from Bogside

A WALL containing the last bullet holes from Bloody Sunday has been removed in Derry’s Bogside, more than 43 years after they were made.

The structure at Glenfada Park, containing holes made by two bullets fired on January 30 1972, will eventually be displayed as an artefact in the newly refurbished Museum of Free Derry which is due to open in May 2016.

Work on the refurbished museum started this week.

The bullet holes were gouged into a wall at an alleyway through which many people tried to escape on Bloody Sunday.

William McKinney and Jim Wray were shot and killed in Glenfada Park while Gerard McKinney and Gerald Donaghy were shot and killed just beyond the alleyway. Four other victims – Michael Quinn, Joe Friel, Patsy Gillespie and Joe Mahon – were shot and wounded in the same area as four Paratroopers walked through the area firing at fleeing marchers.

While many of the bullet holes caused by the Bloody Sunday shootings were eventually covered up through building works, the last two marks remained at the Glenfada Park alleyway.

Architect, George Brennan worked with engineer Gavin Cullen to create a harness so that the section of wall containing the bullet holes could be removed intact. Chairwoman of Derry’s Bloody Sunday Trust, Julieann Campbell said the wall was extremely brittle.

“The section of wall is now in storage for safekeeping and preservation work and will be returned to the museum site when work is completed in April 2016,” she said.

Ms Campbell said the refurbished museum at Glenfada Park would house a state of the art facility and would be complemented by a specially commissioned artwork by Derry sculptor, Locky Morris. The artwork will be called `We Shall Overcome’, reflecting the civil rights’ anthem sung by many of the anti-internment marchers on Bloody Sunday.

“It has been a long and difficult road but we have no doubt that this redevelopment will create a stunning, world-class facility that the people of the Bogside and indeed our entire city can be immensely proud of,” she said.
