Il documentario fatto a Belfast, che esplora la vita e la morte di Bobby Sands avvenuta nel 1981 durante lo sciopero della fame nella prigione di massima sicurezza di maze, è divenuto il film nordirlandese di maggior successo degli ultimi anni.
Bobby Sands: 66 Days ha sorpassato “Hunger” di Steve McQueen e “Good Vibrations” di Terri Hooley al botteghino.
Mentre Hunger ha incassato nelle Sei Contee 109mila sterline e Good Vibrations ha ottenuto 103.000 sterline, Bobby Sands:66 Days nelle quattro settimane di programmazione ha incassato più di 110mila sterline.
Le cifre sono destinate ad aumentare perché il film continua la sua programmazione e le sale che lo proiettano sono sempre piene di pubblico.
Il regista Brendan J. Byrne ha detto: “Questa è semplicemente una notizia fantastica. Questo film mi è molto caro ed è sicuramente l’apice della mia carriera di documentarista.
“Sapevo fosse un argomento molto importante e speravamo che attirasse pubblico sia a nord che a sud. L’incredibile successo al botteghino, unito all’apprezzamento della critica, è stato inatteso ma ben accolto da tutta la squadra che lo ha realizzato.
“Prova che la gente ama un buon documentario e adesso che gli incassi di 66 Days hanno sorpassato due film di fiction – che mi piacciono molto entrambi (Hunger e Good Vibrations) – spero che vedremo più documentari nei nostri cinema.
“Bobby Sands: 66 Days è il primo di una serie di documentari della Fine Point Films che saranno proiettati nei principali festival internazionali di cinema nei prossimi 12 mesi”.

Bobby Sands: 66 Days is most successful Northern Irish film in recent years
A Belfast-made documentary exploring the life and death of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands has become the most successful Northern Irish film in recent years.
Bobby Sands: 66 Days has surpassed recent hits Steve McQueen’s Hunger and the Terri Hooley bio-pic Good Vibrations at the Northern Ireland Box Office.
While Hunger took £109k and Good Vibrations took £103k in total at the Northern Ireland Box Office, Bobby Sands: 66 Days, which is heading into its fourth week of release, has taken £110k so far.
This figure is set to grow even more as the film continues to draw audiences with sold out screenings and new cinema openings including the Odyssey in Belfast today.
Director Brendan J. Byrne said: ” This is simply fantastic news. This film has been dear to my heart and thus far, is certainly the pinnacle of my documentary making career.
“I knew it was very important subject matter and we hoped that it would attract audiences north and south. The sheer box office success of 66 Days, added to our critical acclaim, has been a little unexpected but very welcome for everyone on the production team.
“It just proves that people do love a good documentary and now that the box office for 66 Days has even surpassed two fiction films – both of which I admire hugely (Hunger and Good Vibrations), I hope we’ll see more documentaries in our local cinemas.
