Un camion stipato con il doppio dell’esplosivo utilizzato ad Omagh è stato scoperto sulla A1 tra Belfast e Dublino
Un camion con 1000 libbre (circa 450 chilogrammi) di esplosivo a bordo è stato trovato sotto ad un cavalcavia in South Armagh.
Si trovava sulla A1 Newry Road a Cloghogue – nella nuova corsia costruita tra Dublino e Belfast.
Il Guardian ha saputo che questa settimana gli automobilisti sono passati a fianco al camion, ignari del suo contenuto. Questo ordigno è il doppio di quello esploso nel centro di Omagh il 15 agosto 1998, che provocò la morte di 29 persone.
Gli artificieri dell’esercito inglese hanno trascorso la giornata di ieri ad esaminare il veicolo mentre la polizia scientifica ha analizzato l’area circostante. Ua portavoce della PSNI non ha confermato il contenuto del camion.
L’operazione di sicurezza ha portato a lunghi ritardi al traffico. La M1 è stata chiusa ed il traffico deviato sulla vecchia N1. Gli automobilisti diretti a nord hanno raccontato di lunghe code e di ritardi di quasi un’ora.
La Gardaí, la polizia della Repubblica d’Irlanda, è stata avvertita ed ha fornito assistenza nella gestione del traffico sul lato sud del confine.
La PSNI ha riferito questo mese di temere uno spettacolare attacco da parte dei repubblicani in un centro cittadino tra Natale e l’anno nuovo. I proprietari di negozi, aziende e centri commerciali sono stati avvisati di stare in guardia, specialmente durante i periodi di massima affluenza. L’operazione di sicurezza nella zona di confine ha rovinato il commercio tra nord e sud e vietato a centinaia di acquirenti provenienti dalla Repubblica di approfittare di offerte nelle cittadine del nord come Newry e Banbridge.

Van loaded with twice the amount of explosives used in Omagh is discovered on A1 between Belfast and Dublin
A lorry packed with 1,000lb – about 500kg – of explosives was found under a flyover in south Armagh, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.
It was on the A1 Newry road at Cloghogue – part of the upgraded carriageway between Dublin and Belfast.
The Guardian has learned that this week motorists had been driving past the van unaware it had a huge bomb inside. This device is twice the size of the bomb that devastated the town centre of Omagh in 1998, killing 29 men, women and children.
Technical officers from the British army spent yesterday examining the lorry while the area was forensically examined. A PSNI spokeswoman said she was unable to confirm the contents of the van and the situation was ongoing.
The security operation led to extensive traffic delays. The M1 was closed and traffic diverted onto the old N1 Dublin to Newry road. Motorists heading north reported long tailbacks and delays of almost an hour.
Gardai, the police of the Republic of Ireland, were notified and a spokesperson said they were assisting with traffic management on the southern side of the border.
The PSNI said this month that it was concerned dissidents might attempt a spectacular attack in a town centre over Christmas and the new year. Business owners, shoppers and retail parks were warned to be on their guard, particularly during very busy times. The security operation around the border crossing point seriously disrupted cross-border trade and put off hundreds of southern shoppers seeking a bargain in northern towns such as Newry and Banbridge.
