Un ordigno del peso di 300 libbre (circa 135 kg) è stato al centro di un allarme sicurezza nella Contea di Tyrone, dopo che la bomba era stata lasciata in un furgone fuori dalla stazione di polizia di Aughnacloy
“Possiamo confermare che si trattava di un dispositivo contenente circa 300 libbre di esplosivo” ha detto il Soprintendente Brian Kee.
“Non ho alcun dubbio che se questo ordigno fosse esploso avrebbe provocato devastazione totale e ci sarebbero stati dei morti.
“L’intenzione dei responsabili dell’abbandono di questa bomba nel bel mezzo del villaggio di Aughnacloy è di uccidere agenti di polizia, senza avere riguardo per le persone che vivono in questa comunità”.
Ha poi aggiunto: “Hanno completamente ignorato il fatto che ci sarebbero potuti essere passanti o residenti nelle vicinanze raggiunti e uccisi, o gravemente feriti, dall’esplosione.
“Questo è un oltraggio e dovrebbe essere condannato nei termini più forti possibili da ogni persona.
“E’ grazie al coraggio e alla dedizione dei funzionari locali che hanno controllato la zona notte scorsa e alla collaborazione della comunità locale che nessuno è stato ferito o ucciso.”
Il furgone contenente la bomba è stato abbandonato al di fuori della caserma verso le 22:00 di giovedì notte e un avviso telefonico è stato ricevuto, fornendo solo un’ora di avvertimento prima che l’ordigno esplodesse.
L’evacuazione di circa 350 residenti era ancora in corso quando il termine è scaduto, ma la bomba non è esplosa.
Profondamente angosciante
Il parlamentare dell’Ulster Unionist di Fermanagh e South Tyrone, Tom Elliott, ha condannato la segnalazione come “profondamente angosciante”.
“Le notizie che si trattasse di un ordigno apparentemente grande e funzionante, piazzato con un avviso di solo un’ora, sono profondamente tristi per coloro che sono impegnati per un futuro di pace”, ha detto.
“Il fatto che circa 350 persone sono state evacuate e hanno trascorso la notte nelle sale pubbliche dimostra la serietà con cui la polizia sta prendendo queste minacce.
“Mi congratulo con la PSNI per il continuo lavoro di proteggere la popolazione dell’Irlanda del Nord da coloro che cercano di trascinarci indietro ai giorni bui del passato.”
Elliot ha aggiunto: “Purtroppo, gli eventi degli ultimi mesi hanno dimostrato che non esiste una cosa come l’essere troppo attenti – questi delinquent noni hanno alcun rispetto per la vita. La loro volontà di ferire e mutilare è indiscriminato”.
Il ministro degli Esteri irlandese Michael Martin ha deplorato il tentativo d’attacco bomba.
“Questo è stato un atto sconsiderato e vile il cui unico effetto era quello di mettere in grave pericolo la sicurezza della gente di Aughnacloy” ha detto.
Martin detto che l’attacco non ha alcuna giustificazione o scusa, nessun mandato e senza legittimità.
“Le bande che effettuano tale violenza e atti criminali dovrebbero cessare la loro attività e sciogliersi immediatamente”, ha continuato.
“La volontà chiaramente espressa dalla gente di questa isola, a nord come a sud, è che ci dovrebbe essere la pace, la stabilità e la riconciliazione.
“Gli eletti dal popolo d’Irlanda per rappresentarli non consentirà ad una piccola minoranza non rappresentativa di distrarli dal corso fissato dalla gente”.
Martin ha invitato chiunque abbia informazioni a contattare la Gardai o la PSNI.

300lb bomb caused Aughnacloy alert
A 300lb viable bomb was at the centre of a security alert in Co Tyrone after the device was abandoned in a van outside Aughnacloy PSNI station, police have confirmed.
“We can confirm that this was a viable device containing an estimated 300lbs of explosives,” said Superintendent Brian Kee.
“I have no doubt that if this device had detonated it would have caused complete devastation and lives would certainly have been lost.
“The intention of the people responsible for planting this bomb in the middle of the village of Aughnacloy is to murder police officers with no regard for the people who live in this community.”
He added: “They completely ignored the fact that there could easily have been passers-by or nearby residents caught up and killed or seriously injured in an explosion.
“This is an outrage and should be condemned in the strongest possible terms by every right thinking person.
“It is thanks to the bravery and dedication of the local officers who responded to the area last night and the cooperation of the local community that no one was hurt or killed.”
The van containing the bomb was abandoned outside the barracks at about 10pm on Thursday night and a telephone warning was received, giving just one hour’s warning that the device was due to go off.
The evacuation of about 350 residents was still underway when the deadline passed, but the bomb failed to detonate.
‘Deeply distressing’
Ulster Unionist MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone Tom Elliott condemned the alert as “deeply distressing”.
“News that this was an apparently large and viable device, which was planted with just an hour’s warning, is deeply saddening for those who are committed to a peaceful future,” he said.
“The fact that some 350 people were evacuated and spent the night in local halls demonstrates how seriously the police are taking these threats.
“I commend the PSNI on their ongoing work to protect the people of Northern Ireland from those who seek to drag us back to the dark days of the past.”
Mr Elliot added: “Unfortunately, the events of recent months have shown that there is no such thing as being too careful – these thugs have no respect for life. Their determination to injure and maim is indiscriminate.”
Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Michael Martin deplored the attempted bomb attack.
“This was a reckless and cowardly act whose only impact was to put at grave risk the safety of the people of Aughnacloy,” he said.
Mr Martin said the attack had no justification or excuse, no mandate and no legitimacy.
“The gangs which carry out such violence and criminality should cease their activity and disband immediately,” he continued.
“The clearly expressed will of the people of this island, north and south, is that there should be peace, stability and reconciliation.
“Those elected by the people of Ireland to represent them will not allow a small unrepresentative minority to distract them from the course set by the people.”
Mr Martin called on anyone with information to contact gardai or the PSNI.
