Bomba di 275 kg trovata a Clady. Chiuso il villaggio di confine

La polizia ha confermato di aver ritrovato la bomba da 600 libbre (quasi 275 chilogrammi) in un furgone lasciato a Clady, vicino a Strabane

Il veicolo è stato abbandonato su un ponte nella cittadina, mercoledì sera, con le luci di emergenza accese.

La polizia ha chiuso alcune strade che portano al villaggio mentre l’allarme sicurezza continua.

La polizia ha detto di aver ricevuto l’allarme telefonicamente. Alcuni residenti avevano notato il furgne parcheggiato sul ponte di Urney Road intorno alle 21.

Il consigliere indipendente Gerard Foley è stato tra i primi ad intervenire.

“Siamo rimasti lì e lo abbiamo osservato per 10-15 minuti e poi ci siamo detti: ‘C’è qualcosa di strano qui'”, ha riferito.

“Quindi abbiamo cordonato la strada e messo dei coni di segnalazione. Poi abbiamo avvertito la polizia.

“Non c’è sostegno in questa comunità per ciò che è accaduti, (la gente di) Clady non vuole questi fatti per niente”.

Il consigliere dell’Ulster Unionist, Derek Hussey, “condanna senza riserva” lo scompiglio causato dall’incidente.

“La chiusura di una strada che attraversa il confine ha causato grossi problemi al traffico.

“Un incidente come questo serve solo ad aumentare le preoccupazioni nella comunità, in particolare nel contesto delle recenti attività repubblicane nella provincia”, ha affermato.

Pat Doherty, parlamentare per South Tyrone, ha detto che sono passate ormai 14 ore da quando la polizia ha ricevuto il primo avvertimento.

“Ovviamente desidero vedere la situazione sistemata nel minor tempo possibile.

“I residenti non sanno cosa sta accadendo, e sono preoccupati.

“Hanno bisogno di essere informati su quanto accade qui.

“Chiunque ha parcheggiato il furgone o piazzato l’ordigno, se c’è una bomba all’interno, hanno davvero bisogno di riprendersi”.

“E’ una disgrazia”, ha concluso.

Police warned about ‘600lb bomb’

Police have confirmed that they were told a 600lb bomb has been left in a van in Clady, near Strabane.

The vehicle was abandoned on a bridge in the village on Wednesday night with its hazard warning lights on.

The police have closed a number of roads leading to the village as the security alert continues.

Police said they received the warning by telephone. Locals noticed a van parked on the Urney Road Bridge at about 2100 BST.

Independent councillor Gerard Foley was one of the first to come across the van.

“We stood and looked at it for about 10 or 15 minutes and we said, ‘there’s something not right here’,” he said.

“So we cordoned off the street and put cones across the road, and then we phoned the police.

“There is no support in this community for what is happening, (people) don’t want this in Clady at all.”

Ulster Unionist councillor Derek Hussey said he “unreservedly condemned” the disruption caused by the incident.

“The closure of a cross-border road has caused a great deal of traffic disruption.

“An incident such as this only serves to heighten concerns within the community, particularly in the context of the recent dissident activity across the province,” he said.

West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty said that 14 hours had now passed since the police first received the warning.

“Obviously I would like to see this situation cleared up as quickly as possible.

“The residents don’t know what’s going on, and they’re apprehensive.

“They need to be kept informed as to what’s going to happen here.

“Whoever parked the van there or planted the device, if there is a device, really needs to catch themselves on.

“It’s a disgrace,” he said.
