Un ordigno è stato ritrovato nel corso di un’operazione di sicurezza a West Belfast
Una bomba riempita di biglie è stata ritrovata questa sera a West Belfast.
L’ordigno esplosivo improvvisato è stato scoperto nei pressi di un corso d’acqua poco fuori Colin Road a Poleglass, West Belfast, durante un’estesa ricerca che ha coinvolto personale dell’esercito e della PSNI.
Ci sono notizie contrastanti sulla natura dell’ordigno: alcuni rapporti suggeriscono sua la bomba di un mortaio orizzontale. Tuttavia si ritiene che sia più grande e “più sofisticato di una normale” pipe bomb.
Un ufficiale della polizia scientifica ha lasciato la scena del ritrovamento trasportando una borsa che sembrava contenere biglie o cuscinetti a sfera, oltre che un grande contenitore circolare.
L’ordigno è stato scoperto dopo un’operazione di ricerca su vasta scala che è durata diverse ore. Fonti locali dicono che la squadra di ricerca si è recata direttamente nella zona del corso d’acqua, circondato da una foresta, appena sono giunti a West Belfast all’ora di pranzo.
L’operazione di ricerca è andata avanti per un po’ di tempo prima che fosse interrotta e un uomo in borghese ha lasciato la zona per un breve periodo.
Al suo ritorno, è stata ripresa l’operazione di ricerca e poco dopo è stato trovato l’ordigno. Il ritrovamento sarebbe avvenuto grazie al lavoro di intelligence della polizia, piuttosto che in seguito alla scoperta della bomba da parte di un residente.
Molti veicoli della polizia e due camion degli artificieri dell’esercito sono giunti sulla scena per gran parte del giorno. Una fonte ha detto: “Gli abituali poliziotti di quartiere non erano coinvolti nella ricerca. Questi ragazzi intervenuti erano diversi e sembrava sapessero con certezza cosa stavano cercando e dove si trovasse”.
Alcune case sono state evacuate durante l’operazione di sicurezza.
L’ispettore PSNI Stuart Griffin ha detto: “Gli artificieri hanno partecipato al ritrovamento di un oggetto sospetto e hanno dichiarato che si trattava di un ordigno esplosivo improvvisato. Adesso è stato trasportato via per ulteriori indagini scientifiche.
“Questo ordigno aveva la capacità di causare gravi ferite ed è stato lasciato in un’area pubblica dove chiunque, compresi i bambini, avrebbero potuto trovarlo. Chiedo a chiunque abbia informazioni sull’incidente di contattare la locale stazione di polizia.
“Se qualcuno vuole rilasciare informazioni anonime può contattare Crimestoppers”.
Stephen Magennis, consigliere dello Sinn Féin per l’area, si è scagliato contro i responsabili che hanno lasciato “un ordigno” in Colin Road a Poleglass che ha provocato “gravi disagi per i residenti”.
Ha poi aggiunto: “Questa è una zona residenziale, con molte persone che utilizzano un sentiero nelle vicinanze come scorciatoia per arrivare fino alla scuola.
“Per ora sono state evacuate cinque abitazioni, il Footprints Women’s Centre e il suo asilo nodo.
“Fortunatamente siamo stati in grado di tenere aperto il centro comunitario Sally Gardens per chiunque ne avesse bisogno.
“Questi disagi sono inaccettabili e i responsabili per questo ordigno devono spiegare alla comunità che cosa otterranno.
“Se questo è un ordigno in grado di esplodere, i responsabili hanno messo in grave pericolo questa comunità”.

Bomb packed with marbles found during West Belfast security operation
Device discovered in what appears to have been intelligence lead search near stream in Poleglass area
A bomb packed with marbles was found in West Belfast tonight.
The improvised explosive device was uncovered close to a stream off the Colin Road in Poleglass during an extensive search involving Army and PSNI personnel.
There are conflicting reports regarding the nature of the device with some reports suggesting it was a horizontal type mortar. However, it is believed it was a large and “more sophisticated than usual” pipe bomb.
A forensics officer seen leaving the scene of the find tonight was carrying a bag packed with what appeared to marbles and possibly ball bearings as well as a large circular container.
The device was discovered after a large scale search operation which lasted several hours. Local sources say the search team went straight to the area around the stream, which is surrounded by forest, as soon as they arrived at around lunchtime today.
The search operation went on for some time before it was halted and it appeared that one plain clothes member of the team left the area for a short period.
On his return a secondary sweep was carried out and the device was found soon after. Local sources believe the find was made thanks to the police acting on intelligence rather than after a member of the public found anything suspicious.
A large number of police vehicles and two bomb squad trucks were on the scene for most of the day. One source said: “The usual neighbourhood cops weren’t involved in this. These boys were different and definitely looked like they came in knowing what they were looking for and roughly where it was.”
A number of homes were evacuated during the operation.
PSNI Detective Inspector Stuart Griffin said: “ATO attended the find of a suspicious object and have declared it to be an improvised explosive device which has now been taken away for further forensic examination.
“This device had the capability to cause serious injury and was left in an open public area where anybody, including children, could have found it. I would ask anyone with any information about this incident to contact their local police station on the non emergency number 101.
“Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
Sinn Féin Councillor for the Colin area, Stephen Magennis, slammed those responsible for leaving “a device” at the Colin Road in Poleglass which he said has caused “significant disruption to the local community”.
He added: “This is a built up area with many people using a pathway nearby as a short cut which leads up to a school.
“So far the Footprints Women’s centre and its crèche, along with five family homes have had to be evacuated.
“Fortunately we have been able to get the Sally Gardens community centre open should anyone need it.
“This disruption is unacceptable and those who are responsible for this device need to explain to this community what it will achieve.
“If this is a viable device those behind it have put this community in danger.”
