Una bomba incendiaria sarebbe stata accesa in un negozio di Belfast, nell’ultimo attacco contro il cuore commerciale cittadino.
È stata rimossa da un membro del personale e portata fuori, ha detto la polizia .
I repubblicani hanno intensificato il numero di attacchi terroristici nei giorni prima di Natale, nel tentativo di paralizzare il commercio.
Un portavoce della polizia ha affermato: “Cornmarket nel centro di Belfast è stato chiuso a seguito di un incidente intorno alle 18:40, quando un ordigno incendiario è stato lasciato in un negozio.
“L’ordigno si sarebbe incendiato ma è stato rimosso da un membro del personale e portato fuori”.
L’area è stata chiusa, mentre gli artificieri dell’esercito esaminavano l’ordigno.
Il portavoce della PSNI ha aggiunto: “La polizia sta consigliando le imprese del centro città di controllare i loro locali per trovare eventuali oggetti sospetti”.
Corn Market è un punto focale dello shopping. Dista poche centinaia di metri dal luogo dell’esplosione di venerdì sera, quando i frequentatori sono stati costretti ad evacuare bar e ristoranti. Una borsa sportiva contenente un po’ di esplosivo era stata accesa sul marciapiede nel Cathedral Quarter della città.
La polizia ha intensificato la propria presenza sulle strade dopo che alcuni uomini a volto coperto avevano costretto un autista terrorizzato a trasportare una bomba in un parcheggio nel centro di Belfast.
L’escalation da parte dei repubblicani contrari al processo di pace comprende anche l’invio di lettere bomba ad ufficiali di alto livello della polizia e al Segretario di Stato Theresa Villiers.
Oggi gli artificieri dell’esercito hanno disinnescato una pipe bomb trovata nel giardino di una casa a West Belfast.
Alban Maginness, parlamentare nazionalista SDLP, ha affermato: “È incredibile che dopo aver lasciato una bomba nel quartiere della Cattedrale, Belfast si ritrovi ancora una volta ad affrontare un tentativo di distruzione gratuita.
“Mettere un ordigno incendiario in una zona commerciale è sconsiderato e irresponsabile e non serve a niente.
“Quelli dietro a questo dispositivo incendiario sono anti-Belfast e vogliono solo minacciare i posti di lavoro, i mezzi di sussistenza e la frequentazione della nostra città. Non dobbiamo permettergli di prevalere”.
L’amministratore delegato della Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA), Glyn Roberts, ha detto che la sospetta bomba incendiaria sarebbe stata scoperta nel negozio Golf Centre.
“È assolutamente deprecabile avere un altro attentato nel centro della città, ma so che c’è ancora determinazione assoluta tra i commercianti e gli acquirenti di andare avanti e non essere trascinati nel passato dalle persone che stanno dietro questi attacchi” ha aggiunto.
‘Fire bomb’ attack on Belfast shop
A fire bomb is believed to have ignited at a Belfast shop in the latest attack on the city’s commercial heart.
It was removed by a member of staff and left outside, police said.
Dissident republicans have stepped up the number of terror attacks in the days before Christmas in an effort to cripple the festive trade.
A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) spokesman said: “Cornmarket in Belfast city centre has been closed by police following an incident at around 6.40pm this evening when a suspected incendiary device was left at a shop.
“The device is believed to have ignited but was removed from the premises by staff and left outside.”
The area has been sealed off whilst Army experts examine the device.
The PSNI spokesman added: “Police are advising city centre businesses to check their premises for any suspicious objects.”
Corn Market is a shopping focal point just a few hundred metres from the site of a blast on Friday night when Christmas party goers were forced to evacuate busy bars and restaurants. A sports bag with a small explosive inside ignited on the pavement in the city’s Cathedral Quarter.
Police have stepped up their presence since masked men forced a terrified driver to bring a bomb into a Belfast city centre car park.
The escalation by extremists opposed to the peace process has also included posting letter bombs to senior police commanders and Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers.
Earlier this evening the army defused a pipe bomb found in the garden of a house in West Belfast.
Nationalist SDLP Stormont MLA Alban Maginness said: “It beggars belief that following the placing of a bomb in the Cathedral Quarter on Friday night that Belfast would be faced with yet another attempted act of wanton destruction.
“To place an incendiary device in a busy shopping area is both reckless and irresponsible and serves no rational purpose.
“Those behind this incendiary device are anti-Belfast and just want to threaten jobs, livelihoods and people’s enjoyment of our city. They must not be permitted to prevail.”
Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA) chief executive Glyn Roberts said the suspected fire bomb was believed to have been discovered at the Golf Centre shop.
“It is absolutely despicable that we have another bomb attack in the city centre but I know that there is still an absolute determination amongst traders and shoppers to continue on and not be dragged back by people behind these attacks,” he added.
