Secondo la polizia nordirlandese la bomba ritrovata in una vettura e messa in sicurezza avrebbe dovuto essere usata contro una stazione della PSNI.
L’ordigno è stato recuperato nella Contea di Fermanagh, a poca distanza dal lussuoso resort Lough Erne dove a giugno si terrà la conferenza dei leader del G8. I gruppi repubblicani non allineati al processo di pace sono i primi sospettati.
La comandante distrettuale della PSNI Pauline Shields ha affermato: “La gente responsabile di questo non ha alcun riguardo per le vite di chi vive nella comunità. È uina fortuna che nessuno sia rimasto ucciso o gravemente ferito a causa di questo atto avventato”. L’allarme sicurezza in Derrylin Road a Enniskillen è terminato.
Aggiunge l’ufficiale: “Sebbene le indagini siano in fase preliminare, al momento crediamo che questo veicolo fosse destinato alla stazione PSNI Lisnaskea”.
Dopo la denuncia di un veicolo sospetto visto nella zona nelle prime ore di venerdì, è stata avviata un’operazione sicurezza che è durata tutta la notte fino alle 11 di questa mattina.
I residenti sono stati evacuati dalle loro abitazioni e gli artificieri dell’esercito hanno eseguito un’operazione di bonifica del veicolo sospetto. L’ordigno, in grado di esplodere, è stato messo in sicurezza.
“Ancora una volta la nostra comunità è stata disturbata e la vita dei residenti messa a rischio da elementi che intendono causare perdita di vite umane e distruzione.
“Le persone che hanno compiuto questo atto non fanno parte della società in cui la maggioranza della popolazione del Nord desidera vivere. La complessa operazione ha impiegato risorse che altrimenti si occuperebbero di questioni della comunità”.
Il Segretario di Stato per l’Irlanda del Nord Theresa Villiers ha detto: “Il dispositivo abbandonato con cui si è confrontata la PSNI ci ricorda tristemente che c’è ancora una piccola minoranza determinata a danneggiare le comunità e a causare morte e distruzione. I responsabili non hanno né il mandato né la legittimità. Sono totalmente senza contatto con ciò che vuole la stragrande maggioranza delle persone in Irlanda del Nord”.
Arlene Foster, parlamentare del DUP, ha detto che i responsabili hanno dovuto abbandonare il trasporto della bomba. La politica unionista ricorda che la stazione di polizia di Lisnaskea si trova in una zona residenziale con abitazioni e chiese.
Bomb destined for police station
A bomb found in a car and made safe was destined for a police station, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.
It was recovered in Co Fermanagh not far from the luxury Lough Erne golf resort where this June’s G8 conference of world leaders is being held. Dissident republicans are prime suspects.
PSNI district commander Pauline Shields said: “The people responsible for this have no regard for the lives of anyone in our community. It is fortunate that no-one was killed or seriously injured as a result of this reckless act.” The security alert on the Derrylin Road, Enniskillen, has ended.
Ms Shields added: “Although investigations are at an early stage it is our assessment at present that this vehicle was destined for Lisnaskea PSNI station.”
Following the report of a suspect vehicle in the area in the early hours of Friday a security operation was put in place which continued through the night until approximately 11am this morning.
Residents were evacuated from their homes and Army technical officers carried out a clearance operation on the suspicious car and a viable device was made safe.
Ms Shields added: “Once again our community has been disrupted and the lives of residents put at risk by an element intent on causing loss of life and disruption.
“The people who carried out this act are not part of the society within which the majority of people of Northern Ireland wish to live. The subsequent complex operation has tied up resources that would otherwise be dealing with community issues.”
Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers said: “The abandoned device dealt with by PSNI sadly reminds us that there are still a small minority who are determined to damage communities and cause death and disruption. Those responsible for it have neither mandate nor legitimacy; they are totally out of touch with what the vast majority of people in Northern Ireland want.”
DUP Stormont MLA Arlene Foster said those responsible were intent on taking life but had to abandon transport of the bomb. She said Lisnaskea police station was in a built up area with homes and churches nearby.
