Tre agenti di polizia sono stati bersaglio di un attacco dinamitardo che ha portato alla chiusura della M5 nei pressi di Belfast
I poliziotti stavano rispondendo ad una chiamata nella zona di Hazelbank intorno alle 21:15 di sabato, quando hanno udito un forte scoppio.
Al momento dell’attacco, adesso indicato come tentato omicidio dagli inestigatori, gli agenti stavano percorrendo l’alzaia in Duncrue Street.
La polizia ritiene che gli agenti fossero il reale obiettivo dell’attacco.
Hanno confermato che un ordigno esplosivo è esploso dopo le ricerche che hanno coinvolto elicotteri e artificieri dell’esercito per tutta la giornata di domenica.
Nessuno è rimasto ferito nell’attacco ma una portavoce della PSNI ha affermato che gli agenti sono rimasti scossi da quanto avvenuto.
Henry Irvine, Soprintendente Capo e comandante del Distretto, ha detto che i suoi colleghi sono stati fortunati ad essere ancora vivi.
Condannando l’attacco, Irvine ha affermato: “Questa è una zona ben conosciuta utilizzata quotidianamente dai membri della comunità locale. Solo per la buona sorte gli agenti di polizia e la popolazione non è rimasta ferita o uccisa la notte scorsa”.
La polizia è interessata a parlare con chiunque abbia notato attività insolite o veicoli sospetti tra le prime ore di venerdì e la sera di sabato.
La M5, chiusa per 24 ora tra Hazelbank e Greencastle, è stata riaperta.
La zona di Duncrue è rimasta chiusa da Dargan a Fortwilliam fino alla notte di domenica.
Alcuni oggetti sono stati portati via dalla scena dell’attacco per ulteriori analisi.

M5 bomb blast was ‘attempted murder’
Three police officers have escaped injury in a bomb attack, which forced the closure of the M5 motorway in the outskirts of north Belfast at the weekend.
The officers were responding to a call in the Hazelbank area at around 9.15pm on Saturday when they heard a loud bang.
They were making their way along the Duncrue towpath at the time of the attack, which police are now treating as attempted murder.
Police say they believe the officers were the intended target of the attack.
They confirmed that an explosive device had detonated after searches, involving police helicopters and army bomb experts, were conducted in the area on Sunday.
No one was injured in the attack; however a PSNI spokeswoman said the officers were left badly shaken.
District Commander Chief Superintendent Henry Irvine said his colleagues were lucky to be alive.
Condemning the attack, he said: “This is a well-known area that is used every day by members of the local community. It is only by good fortune that police officers and members of the public were not killed or seriously injured last night.”
Police say they are extremely keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed any unusual activity or suspicious vehicles between the early hours of Friday morning and 9pm on Saturday.

The M5, which was closed between Hazelbank and Greencastle for almost 24 hours, has reopened.
The Duncrue towpath remained closed from Dargin to Fortwilliam on Sunday night.
A number of items have been removed from the scene for further forensic examination.
