La polizia ha confermato la scoperta di quattro mortai funzionanti durante l’allarme sicurezza che ha obbligato centinaia di persone a lasciare le proprie abitazioni a Derry. L’operazione di sicurezza prosegue anche questa mattina.
Una portavoce della PSNI dice che i mortai sono stati scoperti in un furgone fermato in Letterkenny Road ieri sera.
“Tre uomini sono stati arrestati e sono attualmente interrogati presso la Serious Crime Suite della stazione di Antrim”, ha detto.
Si è appreso che parte del tetto del furgone sarebbe stato tagliato.
Più di 100 case sono state evacuate quando la polizia è intervenuta sul veicolo nei pressi dello svincolo tra Letterkenny Road e Foyle Road.
Molte persone che hanno dovuto lasciare le loro case nella serata di domenica erano anziani e un’operazione di sicurezza è ancora in corso.
Le strade della zona rimangono chiuse.
Il parlamentare dello SDLP Pat Ramsey ha elogiato il lavoro della PSNI.
“Accolgo con favore gli sforzi compiuti dalla PSNI per sequestrare quattro bombe di mortaio funzionanti che erano state innescate e pronte ad essere lanciate. Se non fosse stato per le azioni rapide degli agenti di polizia, forse avremmo potuto svegliarci con notizie devastanti.
“Il fatto che il tetto del furgone era stato tagliato dimostra la reale intenzione di usare questi ordigni per provocare ferite gravi o la morte.
“Sono costernato che repubblicani continuino ad esercitare un’attività che mostra un disprezzo spietat per la vita umana. Ogni minaccia a coloro che lavorano per difendere lo stato di diritto è del tutto aberrante.
“Quest’anno speciale per Derry non può essere messo in ombra dagli sforzi spericolati di una minoranza delirante. La gente qui merita di vivere in una società libera dalla violenza e dalla minaccia di violenza”.
La parlamentare per Foyle dello Sinn Féin, Maeve McLaughlin, ha detto chel’incidente aveva lasciato molti residenti in difficoltà.
“Mentre i fatti relativi all’incidente di domenica sera stanno ancora venendo a galla, ciò che è chiaro è che centinaia di persone sono state costrette ad abbandonare le proprie case e sono stati causati disagi molto diffusi su alcune delle vie principali del nostro centro città.
“È stata una notte molto fredda ed è stato particolarmente doloroso per molte delle persone anziane che hanno dovuto lasciare le abitazioni.
“Siamo stati con i residenti che sono stati costretti ad andare al Brooke Park Leisure Centre a cercare rifugio. Vorrei elogiare il personale del Comune, il manager del City Centre Jim Roddy, Sean Collins CRJ e gli operatori comunitari per il loro aiuto durante tutta la notte.
“Hanno lavorato insieme per garantire che tutti i residenti interessati avessero ottenuto l’aiuto di parenti o fossero andati in alloggi d’emergenza”, ha detto.

Live mortars found in Derry security alert
Police have confirmed the discovery of four live mortars as the security alert that forced hundreds out of their homes in Derry continues this morning.
A PSNI spokeswoman says the live mortars were discovered in a van on the Letterkenny Road last night.
“Three men were arrested and are currently being questioned by police at Antrim Serious Crime Suite,” she said.
It is understood the van had part of its roof cut away.
More than 100 homes had to be evacuated when the police moved in on the vehicle close to the junction of Letterkenny Road and Foyle Road.
Several people who had to leave their homes on Sunday night were elderly and a security operation is still ongoing.
Roads in the area remain closed.
SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey praised the work of the PSNI.
“I welcome the sterling efforts of the PSNI to seize four live mortar bombs which were primed and ready to go. If it wasn’t for the swift actions of police officers then we could be waking up to devastating news.
“The fact that the van’s roof had been cut back shows that there was real intent to use these devices to cause serious injury or death.
“I am dismayed that dissident republicans continue to pursue activity which shows a ruthless disregard for human life. Any threat to those people who work to uphold the rule of law is totally abhorrent.
“This special year for Derry cannot be overshadowed by the reckless efforts of a delusional minority. People here deserve to live in a society free from violence and the threat of violence.”
Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Maeve McLaughlin said the incident had left many residents distressed.
“Whilst the events around Sunday night’s incident are still emerging ,what is clear is that hundreds of people were forced to flee their homes and it caused wide spread disruption on several of the main arterial routes into our city centre.
“It was a very cold night and it was particularly distressing for many of the elderly people who had to leave their homes.
“We were with residents who were forced to go to Brooke Park Leisure Centre to seek refuge. I would like to commend the council staff there, City Centre manager Jim Roddy, Sean Collins CRJ and community workers for their help throughout the night ,right up until after 2am on Monday morning.
“They worked collectively to ensure that all the residents affected got help from relatives or got them fixed up with emergency accommodation,” she said.
