Carroll murder appeals rejected

Brendan McConville | John Paul Wootton

Two men convicted of the murder of PSNI constable Stephen Carroll have had their appeals dismissed at the High Court in Belfast.

Brendan McConville, 42, was sentenced to a minimum 25 year jail sentence for the gun attack in March 2009.

John Paul Wooton, 22, also from Craigavon, was sentenced to 14 years behind bars for the murder.

In 2009 the Continuity IRA claimed it carried out the sniper attack which killed Constable Carroll while he answered an emergency call in the Lismore Avenue area of Craigavon in March 2009.

Both Wooton and McConville denied any involvement in the attack, however, in their 2012 trial the judge ruled there was compelling evidence against the pair.

The men’s case has been subject to a high-profile campaign backed by Gerry Conlon who was wrongly convicted of involvement in the 1974 Guildford pub bombing.

The human rights campaigner, Father Raymond Murray, has also raised his doubts about the convictions.

Chief among their concerns was testimony from a man, known as Witness M, who was described as a “Walter Mitty character who liked to tell tales”.

On Thursday the Lord Chief Justice dismissed the appeals.
