Il nuovo leader del PUP ha detto a Utv che intende presentarsi come candidato per East Belfast alle prossime elezioni, contro l’ex leader del partito Dawn Purvis, ora candidata unionista indipendente
Dawn Purvis si dimise sia dalla dirigenza che dall’appartenenza al partito dopo l’omicidio di Bobby Moffett a Shankill Road a maggio, non impedito da UVF.
Anche altri membri del partito lealista si sono dimessi subito dopo l’assassinio, tra cui l’importante membro Dugald McCullough.
L’Independent Monitoring Commission ha descritto l’omicidio come un’esecuzione pubblica avallata dalla dirigenza della UVF.
Lo scorso mese i membri del PUP hanno votato a favore del mantenimento dei loro legami con la UVF e con il Red Hand Commando durante una riunione a Belfast.
Ervine si dice ottiista sul futuro elettorale del PUP.
“Non mi presento contro Dawn per il fatto del Progressive Unionist Party. Mi candiderò non per ostacolare Dawn ma per far mantenere il seggio al PUP contro chiunque”, ha spiegato.
Ervine ha anche affermato a Utv di essere fiducioso che non sarà sempre comparato a suo fratello David, il quale giocò un ruolo significativo durante il processo di pace.
“Sono stato felice di essere stato in disparte perché ha fatto un meraviglioso lavoro”, dice Brian Ervine di suo fratello.
“Ha prodotto frutti e sono sbocciati.
“Non sto cercando di essere il secondo David Ervine d’Irlanda; io sono il primo Brian Ervine”.

Ervine will contest assembly elections
The new leader of the PUP has told UTV he intends to contest the East Belfast assembly seat next May against the party’s former leader Dawn Purvis, who will be standing as an Independent Unionist.
Ms Purvis resigned both her leadership and membership of the PUP following the murder of Bobby Moffett by the UVF on the Shankill Road in May.
A number of party members also resigned in the wake of the killing, including senior member Dugald McCullough.
The Independent Monitoring Commission described the killing as a public execution sanctioned by the UVF leadership.
Last month, PUP members voted to maintain their links with the UVF and the Red Hand Commando at a meeting in Belfast.
Mr Ervine says he is optimistic about the electoral future of the PUP.
“I am not so much against Dawn as for the Progressive Unionist Party. I’ll be standing not to thwart Dawn but to retain the seat for the PUP against whoever is there,” he explained.
Mr Ervine also told UTV he is confident he will not always be compared to his late brother, David, who played a significant role during the peace process.
“I was happy to take a back seat because he did a wonderful job”, Brian Ervine said of his brother.
“He produced fruits and they blossomed.”
“I’m not attempting to be Ireland’s second David Ervine; I’m Ireland’s first Brian Ervine.”
