I tre repubblicani irlandesi – Francis Mackey, Peter Fitzsimmons e Martin Rafferty – cui era stato impedito l’ingresso in Canada sono stati rilasciati dal carcere a Toronto e sono rientrati in Irlanda.
Un portavoce del 32 County Sovereignty Movement (o 32 CSM), gruppo contrario all’Accordo del Venerdì Santo del 1998 e a favore dell’unificazione dell’Irlanda, dice che i suoi membri sono arrivati a casa venerdì mattina, dopo il loro rilascio dal Maplehearst Correctional Complex di Milton, Ontario.
“Sono tutti esausti e hanno bisogno di tempo per recuperare”, ha detto il portavoce in un messaggio elettronico.
I tre uomini doveva recarsi in Canada per un tour di conferenze, ma sono stati giudicati “irricevibili” quando sono sbarcati al Pearson International Airport, ha spiegato il portavoce del 32 CSM. Il gruppo ha definito la decisione di vietare l’ingresso in Canada ai loro membri “una diretta violazione della libertà di parola” e un tentativo di mettere a tacere i repubblicani irlandesi.
Il gruppo ha tenuto una piccola manifestazione davanti all’ambasciata canadese a Dublino, venerdì scorso, in segno di protesta.
Citando la normativa sulla privacy, il Canada Border Services Agency ha rifiutato di confermare anche l’arresto dei prominenti membri del 32 CSM. Nessuna risposta, infatti, è giunta dalle chiamate verso l’ufficio del Ministro alla Pubblica Sicurezza Steven Blaney.
Il 32 CSM non è un gruppo ritenuto legato agli ambienti terroristici in Canada, ma viene ritenuto collegato alla Real IRA, gruppo armato bandito dagli Stati Uniti.
L’ente per la sicurezza in Canada, Public Safety Canada, in un rapporto del 21013 ha avvertito che “diversi gruppi repubblicani irlandesi, tra cui la Real Irish Republican Army, hanno lanciato o tentato una serie di attacchi in Irlanda del Nord l’anno scorso”.
Il 32 County Sovereignty Movement (o 32 CSM) nega i collegamenti alla Real IRA.

Irish republicans released from Canadian custody, group says
Three members of an Irish republican group who were barred entry to Canada have been released from jail in Toronto and have returned home to Ireland, the group says.
A spokesperson for the 32 County Sovereignty Movement (or 32 CSM), which advocates for unification of Ireland and opposes the 1998 Good Friday peace agreement, says its members arrived home Friday morning after they were held at the Maplehearst Correctional Complex in Milton, Ont.
“They are all exhausted and need time to recuperate,” the spokesperson said in an electronic message.
The three men were booked on a six-day speaking tour in Canada but were deemed inadmissible upon arriving at Pearson International Airport, 32CSM said. The group called the decision to bar their members “a direct violation of freedom of speech” and an attempt to silence Irish republicans.
The group held a small demonstration outside the Canadian Embassy in Dublin in protest on Friday.
Citing privacy legislation, the Canada Border Services Agency has refused to even confirm the men were detained. Calls to Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney’s office were not returned.
The group is not currently a listed terrorist entity in Canada but has been linked by reports to the Real Irish Republican Army, which is banned in United States.
Public Safety Canada warned in a 2013 report that “several dissident Irish Republican groups, including the Real Irish Republican Army, have launched or attempted a number of attacks in Northern Ireland in the past year.”
The 32 County Sovereignty Movement (or 32 CSM) denies reported links to the Real Irish Republication Army, and has denounced the 1998 Omagh car bombing for which the Real IRA was blamed.
