La redazione di Les Enfants Terribles intervista Carl Reilly, Presidente Nazionale di Republican Network for Unity
LET: Continuano le brutali azioni della RUC/PSNI contro membri del Movimento Repubblicano. In particolare sembrano prendere di mira i membri del Republican Network for Unity. Alcuni giorni fa, di ritorno da Dublino, il Presidente Nazionale di RNU Carl Reilly è stato bloccato e maltrattato dagli agenti della squadra speciale C4 e da 4 Land Rover della PSNI. Hanno ordinato a lui e ad altri tre attivisti di RNU di non fare movimenti improvvisi e di non guardarli, altrimenti gli avrebbero sparato
CR: Le squadre di intervento armato PSNI (Armed response teams) agiscono nello stile tipico dei loro predecessori della RUC con brutalità e ignoranza. Lo stop and search (fermo e la perquisizione) è stato progettato per ostacolare la progressiva crescita di RNU. Riteniamo che l’azione sull’autostrada A1, e le azioni analoghe in tutta Irlanda, sono fatte su istruzione dell’MI5 e sono istituite per soffocare le voci repubblicane in Irlanda, rappresentando la visione del Repubblicanesimo dello SInn Fein come l’unico Repubblicanesimo legittimato.
I membri Rnu non saranno vittime di bullismo o molestate né dalle forze britanniche e neppure dai loro mercenari locali che offrono un supporto per le azioni contro i nostri membri e le loro famiglie.
LET: Nel mese di aprile RNU tentato di consegnare una lettera al ministro della Giustizia David Ford, chiedendo l’attuazione dell’accordo di Maghaberry del 12 agosto 2010. Adesso la protesta in Roe House è ripresa. Visto il precedente, quale risultato sarà ritenuto accettabile per porre fine alla protesta? E quali azioni intende svolgere il vostro POW Department Cogús?
CR: Cogús chiede che David Ford ed il NIPS mantengano in pieno gli impegni assunti nell’accordo del 12 agosto. Gli strip search (degradanti perquisizioni corporali) dei prigionieri di guerra che entrano ed escono dal carcere Maghaberry sono destinati a minare lo spirito e le parole sancite nell’accordo. Il ministero di Giustizia ha la necessità di adottare un approccio pragmatico e umanitario sul problema dello strip search e deve installare la promessa boss chair che elimina la necessità di un’intrusiva e degradante perquisizione. Cogús raccoglierà il sostegno per assicurare che l’accordo non venga diluito e sia attuato nella sua interezza, per il miglioramento dei prigionieri di guerra e delle loro famiglie.
LET: RNU è un “umbrella group” di ispirazione repubblicana, come si definiscono ad esempio anche éirígí e IRSP. Come RNU cerca di differenziare la propria agenda politica?
CR: Siamo lieti di rispondere attraverso la correzione alla tua domanda. E’ un errore generale fatto da giornalisti e da alcuni repubblicani pensare che RNU sia in qualche modo un gruppo di coordinamento il cui unico scopo è quello di riunire tutte le forze repubblicane. E’ stato il ruolo dell’Irish Republican forum for Unity di agire come un «umbrella group». RNU è un’entità a sé stante, costituito da ex prigionieri di guerra ed ex combattenti, i quali credevano che ci fosse un gruppo di repubblicani non collegati ai gruppi repubblicani esistenti che stavano cercando un veicolo per la promozione di un’alternativa radicale repubblicana socialista contro lo status quo corrente. Dal 2007 ad oggi RNU è stata una voce progressista e di principio.
LET: Nell’ottica di un referendum per l’unità nazionale irlandese, come cambiano le strategie repubblicane?
CR: Presumo che insinuare che il referendum si basi sul fatto di essere una consultazione all-Ireland (tenuto in tutta l’Irlanda) libera da influenze esterne, allora RNU si impegnerebbe a far votare gli irlandesi per assicurare l’autodeterminazione nazionale irlandese. RNU rispetterebbe l’esito di tale referendum.
LET: Quanto è importante, oggi, il supporto storico delle lobby della destra liberale americana?
CR: Gli americani-irlandesi e la diaspora irlandese negli Stati Uniti è sempre stata sostenitrice della posizione irlandese repubblicana in Irlanda. RNU accoglie favorevolmente il sostegno degli americani irlandesi che sottoscrivono l’idea di una repubblica socialista democratica di 32 contee in Irlanda.
LET: La stagione delle marce sta per iniziare. Dobbiamo aspettarci ancora le barricate come nel 2010?
CR: RNU sostiene il diritto dei residenti a vivere liberi da settarismo e dalle molestie. Come abbiamo visto ad Ardoyne nel 2010, unionisti e lealisti hanno insistito per marciare dove non erano voluti. Il GARC ha cercato di impegnarsi in un sit down di protesta pacifico per far vedere all’Orange Order ed al mondo che non avevano alcun desiderio di vivere come cittadini di seconda classe. Agenti della PSNI pesantemente armati, con proiettili di plastica, cannoni ad acqua, la minaccia dell’uso di manganelli e di proiettili hanno trascinato i residenti di Ardoyne sulla strada. La violenza del giorno non può che essere imputata alla mano pesante utilizzata dallo Stato. RNU spera di non vedere violenza nel 2011, ma alla fine il fattore decisivo sarà l’azione dello Stato.
LET: Una nuova ondata di arresti. Crimini di opinioni, polizia politica, DPP e i reali britannici sul suolo irlandese. Quanto è progredita e come vedi la questione sull’identità nazionale irlandese, oggi
CR: I recenti arresti manifestano la politicizzazione della polizia che passa per semplice polizia oggi in Irlanda. Ci è stato detto di opporci all’Accordo del Venerdì Santo in maniera strettamente politica, tuttavia sembra non sia accettabile per qualcuno. Stiamo lentamente vedendo l’erosione dell’identità irlandese, dove la maggior parte dei giovani hanno più cose in comune con la “cultura di MTV”. Anche gli organismi sportivi che hanno sofferto molto per mano degli inglesi, hanno tristemente abbracciato le sottoculture straniere in cambio di denaro. Oggi l’Irlanda ha una crisi di identità. Devono guardare dentro sé stessi e valutare fino a che punto siamo arrivati nel tentativo di interrompere il collegamento con l’Inghilterra, ma in realtà sono giunti ad accettare uno stile di vita inglese. Semplicemente, il tentativo di ritrarlo come “irlandese” o “Normale”.
Carl Reilly ha scontato cinque anni di carcere per aver assaltato a mano armata la base della Royal Ulster Constabulary di Woodbourne a West Belfast. E’ stato O/C dei prigionieri repubblicani a Maghaberry.

LET: Brutal RUC/PSNI actions against members of the Republican Movement are ongoing. In particular they seem to target RNU members. A few days ago, returning from Dublin, the National Chairperson of RNU Carl Reilly was detained and mistreated by the officers from armed response team undercovered Psni / C4 and 4 Psni land rovers. They ordered him and the other RNU activists not to make sudden movements or look at them, or they would be shot.
CR: The PSNI armed response teams acted in typical RUC predecessor fashion with brutality and ignorance. The stop and search was designed to hamper the forward progressive Movement of RNU. We believe that the action on the A1 highway, and similar actions across Ireland, are on the instructions of MI5 and they are designed to stifle republican voices in Ireland and to portray Sinn Feins brand of Republicanism as the only legitimate Republicanism.
Rnu members will not be bullied or harassed by either british forces or/and their local mercenaries who offer support for actions against our members and families.
LET: In April RNU tried to deliver a letter to Justice Minister David Ford, asking the implementation of the Maghaberry Agreement of 12th August 2010. Now the protest in Roe House has resumed. Given the above, what would be an acceptable result to end the protest? And what does your POW Department, Cogús, intend to do?
CR: Cogús is demanding that David Ford, the NIPS, deliver in full their commitments made in the 12th of August agreement. The strip searching of POWs entering and leaving Maghaberry prison, is designed to undermine the spirit and word that was enshrined in the agreement. The Justice department need to take a pragmatic and humanitarian approach on the issue of strip searching and install the promised boss chair that does away with the need for intrusive and degrading strip searching. Cogus will lobby support to insure that agreement is not diluited and is implemented in full for the betterment of POWs and their families.
LET: RNU is an “umbrella group”inspired by Republican Socialism like, for example, éirígí and IRSP. How RNU seeks to differentiate the political agenda?
CR: We would like to answer by correcting your question. It’s a general mistake that is made by journalists and some republicans that RNU is some how an umbrella group whos sole pourpose is to bring all the republican groupings together. It was the role of the Irish Republican forum for Unity to act as an /umbrella/ group. Rnu, is an entity in its own right we are made up of former pows and ex combatants, who believed that there was a body of republicans not attached to the then crop of republican groups that were looking a vehicle for promoting a radical socialist republican alternative to the then current status quo. From 2007 to the present, Rnu has delivered a progressive and principled voice.
LET: In the perspective of a referendum on national unity, how will the Irish Republican strategies change?
CR: I assume insinuating that the referendum is based on the premise that it would be an all Ireland consultation free from outside influences, then Rnu would lobby the Irish people to use their vote to insure Irish national self determination. Rnu would respect the outcome of any such referendum.
LET: How important is, today, the historic support of the American right-liberal lobbies?
CR: Irishamericans and the Irish diaspora in the USA has always been supportive of the Irish republican position in Ireland. Rnu welcomes the support of Irish Americans who subscribe the the notion of 32 county democratic socialist republic in Ireland.
LET: The marching season is about to start. Do we have to expect again barricades as in 2010?
CR: Rnu supports the right of residents to live free from sectarianism and harrasment as we seen in Ardoyne in 2010, unionism and loyalism were insistent on coat trailing in areas were they werent wanted. Garc attempted to engage in a peaceful sit down protest to let the orange order and the world see that they had no desire to live as second class citizens. Heavily armed Psni, armed with plastic bullets, water cannons, batons and threat of live rounds trailed Ardoyne residents off the road. The violence on the day can only be blamed on the heavy handed tacticts of the State. Rnu hope to see no violence in 2011, but ultimately the action of the State would be the deciding factor on the day.
LET: A new wave of arrests. Crimes of opinions, political police, dpp and the royals on Irish soil. How far did it go and how do you see the Irish national identity issue, today.
CR: The recent arrests, exposed the overt political policing that passes for policing in Ireland today. We have been told by the great and the good to oppose the Gfa in strictly political fashion, however even that it seems isn’t acceptable to some. We are slowly seeing the erosion of Irish identity where for the most part are young people have more in common with “MTV culture”. Even Irish sporting bodies that suffered greatly at hands of the british, have sadly embraced foreign subcultures in return for money. Ireland today has an identity crise, they need to look on themselves and assess how far we have come in attempting to break the connection with England but in reality have come to accept an english way of life. Merely, and attempt to portray it as “Irish” or “Normal”.
