Sharon Wootton al Belfast Crown CourtJohn Paul Wootton, 20, and former Sinn Féin councillor Brendan McConville, aged 40, of Aldervale, Tullygally, both deny the charges against them.

Wootton’s mother Sharon, of Collindale in Lurgan, is also charged with perverting the course of justice.

Kate Carroll was joined at Belfast Crown Court by her son Shane, and Constable Carroll’s mother, father, sister and brother.

Constable Carroll, 48, was close to the end of his 12-hour shift when a gunman shot him in the head in his car in the Lismore Manor area of the town on 9 March 2009.

The grandfather had served 24 years in the police and was the first PSNI officer to be murdered, since the force replaced the RUC.

Just two days before he was murdered, Sappers Patrick Azimkar and Mark Quinsey were shot dead at Massereene Army Barracks in Antrim as they collected a pizza delivery.
