Carroll Trial: Sharon Wootton si dichiara colpevole

Carroll accused mother pleads guilty

The mother of one of the men accused of the murder of Constable Stephen Carroll pleaded guilty to attempting to obstruct a police officer.

Sharon WoottonStanding in the dock of Belfast Crown Court, 39-year-old Sharon Wootton pleaded guilty to the charge in that on a date unknown between 8 – 11 March 2009, she removed computer equipment from her home in Collingdale to another address at Ardhowen, both in Lurgan.

Wootton had originally faced a charge of perverting the course of justice – but trial judge Lord Justice Girvan acquitted her of that count after the Crown offered no further evidence on it.

Her 20-year-old son John Paul Wootton from Collingdale, Lurgan is in the dock alongside former Sinn Fein councillor 40-year-old Brendan McConville, accused of murdering 48-year-old Constable Stephen Carroll on 9 March 2009, just two days after two soldiers were gunned down outside Massereene Army Barracks in Antrim.

Constable Carroll, a 48-year-old married man and grandfather with 24 years service in the police, was nearing the end of his 12-hour shift when he was sent to a 999 call-out in Lismore Manor, Craigavon where a gunman was lying in wait 50 metres away.

On Friday, defence QC Karen Quinlivan applied for continuing bail for Sharon Wootton while pre-sentence probation reports are completed.

Lord Justice Girvan adjourned passing sentence until a date to be fixed.
