Il sedicenne James Cork stava cercando di recuperare vecchi rottami metallici ma si è imbattuto in un presunto deposito di armi d’assalto dell’IRA
Un adolescente cacciatore di tesori ha trovato più di quanto si aspettasse, scoprendo un enorme deposito di armi.
James Cork era fuori con il suo metal detector alla ricerca di vecchi rottami quando ha portato a casa un bottino piuttosto insolito – un presunto deposito di armi dell’Irish Republican Army (IRA).
James, 16 anni di Somerset, stava cercando di pescare oggetti metallici al Greylake, nei Somerset Levels, usando una corda ed un potente magnete.
Quando ha sentito di aver preso qualcosa dall’acqua, insieme ad un amico ha cercato di recuperare il bottino, ma è rimasto interdetto quando ha estratto circa 40 armi.
Ha detto: “Sono rimasto scioccato. Non ho mai trovato nulla di simile prima. C’erano alcune armi complete, ma non molte. Alcune erano mitragliatrici, pistole e revolver e c’era un enorme mitragliatrice su un supporto…”
Un pescatore, anch’egli sbalordito, è giunto ad aiutare i due ragazzi, dopo aver scoperto quello che avevano trovato.
Sono state portate alla luce parti di una mitragliatore nazista MG 42 e un mitragliatore ceco SA23 9 millimetri.
Dopo aver fatto la loro sconvolgente scoperta, i due amici hanno lanciato la maggior parte delle armi di nuovo in acqua, ma James ne ha tenuta una – una Smith & Wesson del 1939 – per giocarci a casa.
Quando sua madre ha visto il ragazzo giocare con l’arma ha immediatamente chiamato la polizia.
Katherine, la madre di James Cork, ha detto di aver sempre chiesto di non portare nulla di illegale in casa.
Ha affermato: “Ma non avrei mai pensato di vedere uno dei miei figli in possesso di una pistola. Gli ho ordinaot di portarla al piano di sotto, di lasciarla in cucina e di non toccarla”.
Dopo aver chiamato la polizia, gli agenti hanno dragato il fiume per recuperare il resto delle armi.
Un portavoce della polizia di Avon e Somerset ha detto: “Nessuna delle armi era completa, erano estremamente arrugginite e molto vecchie. Tutte le componenti delle armi sono state o stanno per essere distrutte”.
Gli esperti hanno affermato che le armi forse erano state utilizzate dall’IRA durante i Troubles, ma potevano essere state portate nel fiume prima della decommissioning (messa fuori uso delle armi) del 2001.
L’ex sergente SAS Andy McNab ha detto che la presenza di armi con grandi caricatori di munizioni gli fa pensare ad un deposito dell’IRA.
“Questo dovrebbe essere un deposito terrorista. Lo dico perché ci sono armi di varie fasce – da quelle per un utilizzo ravvicinato fino al Browning che avrebbe potuto abbattere un elicottero o danneggiare una Land Rover”.

A teenage treasure hunter found more than he bargained for after discovering a massive stash of deadly weapons.
James Cork was out with his metal detector searching for bits of old scrap when he snagged a haul quite like any other – a suspected IRA weapons dump.
James, 16, was taking part in magnet fishing, a hobby he started six months ago, and began combing Greylake on the Somerset Levels with a rope and strong magnet.
Along with a pal, James suddenly got a catch but was stunned when he came across the 40-strong haul of weapons.
He said: “I was shocked. I’ve never found anything like this before. There were a few whole weapons, but not many. Some were machine guns, pistols and revolvers. And there was a massive machine gun on a stand.”
A stunned fisherman came over and helped the boys after spotting what they had found.
Among the haul were parts of a Nazi MG 42 light machine gun and a Czech SA23 9mm submachine gun.
After making their shocking discovery, the two pals threw most of the weapons back in the water, but James kept one – a 1930s Smith & Wesson – home to play with.
His stunned mother then saw the teenager playing with the weapon and immediately called police.
Katherine, James’ mother, told how she stresses that nothing illegal is allowed in the house.
She said: “But I didn’t think I’d be dealing with one of my kids holding a gun. I said, “Bring it downstairs, leave it in the kitchen and don’t touch it”.”
After police were called, officers dredged the river the following day to recover the rest of the weapons.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “None of the weapons were complete, and they were extremely rusty and very old. All of the weapon parts have been or are being destroyed.”
Experts today claimed the weapons could have been used by the IRA during The Troubles, but they may have been dumped when paramilitaries were meant to be declaring arms in 2001.
Former SAS sergeant Andy McNab said the fact that some of the weapons had large machine gun barrels, meant it could be the IRA.
He said: “This must be a terrorist bundle. That’s because there are weapons for various ranges — from close assassination ones to the Browning that could take out a helicopter or Land Rover.”
