John Aughey, 61 anni, era stato coinvolto nelle discussioni tra i residenti nazionalisti e i membri degli ordini lealisti.
L’uomo di North Belfast era protagonista anche della protesta lealisti di Twaddell Avenue e aveva agito come portavoce delle logge dell’Orange Order coinvolte nella disputa.
Durante un raduno di protesta tenutosi vicino all’interfaccia lo scorso mese, John Aughey disse agli orangisti che l’Ordine “non avrebbe fatto il lavoro della polizia”.
L’Orange order è stato duramente criticato per aver ritirato il servizio d’ordine dalla parata di quest’anno che ha attraversato Ardoyne.
Lunedì sera ci sono stati disordini nella zona e l’Assistente del Comandante della Polizia Stephen Martin ha definito “deplorevole” la decisione di non effettuare il servizio d’ordine per contenere i sostenitori.
Il mese scorso, criticando il Chief Constable George Hamilton e il Segretario di Stato Theresa Villiers, John Aughey disse: “Dopo un anno di false promesse e di patti infranti dal Segretario di Stato ne abbiamo avuto abbastanza dei luoghi comuni.
“È un atto d’accusa contro questo sistema che punisce e maltratta la gente rispettosa sulla base della violenza, intimidazione e rimostranze palesemente false”.
A condividere la scena con John Aughey furono il Gran Maestro della Contea di belfast George Chittick, il portavoce del PUP Winston Irvine e Gerald Solinas dell’UPRG.
La polizia ha arrestato John Aughey lunedì sera, dopo che la sua vettura ha investito diverse persone in Crumlin Road, ferendo gravemente una ragazza di 16 anni, Phoebe Clawson, finita sotto la sua auto e ora ricoverata in gravi condizioni.
La notte scorsa è stato accusato di tentato omicidio.
Un portavoce dell’Orange Order ha dichiarato: “Considerato che l’incidente è oggetto di un’indagine della polizia, non è opportuno di commentare.”

John Aughey (61) has been involved in discussions between nationalist residents and members of the loyal orders and other groups.
The north Belfast man has also been prominent in the ongoing loyalist protest at Twaddell Avenue and has acted as a spokesman for Orange lodges caught up in the dispute.
During a protest rally close to the interface last month, Mr Aughey told Orangemen that the order “will not do the police’s job for them”.
The Orange Order has been criticised for withdrawing marshals from this year’s ‘Twelfth’ parade at Ardoyne.
There was serious rioting in the area on Monday night and PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Stephen Martin described the decision not to marshal march supporters as “regrettable”.
Criticising Chief Constable George Hamilton and Secretary of State Theresa Villiers at last month’s rally, Mr Aughey said: “After a year of false promises and broken pledges from the secretary of state and others this community has had enough of the platitudes.
“It is an indictment of this system that law-abiding people are being punished and mistreated on the basis of violence, intimidation and quite frankly blatantly bogus grievances.”
It was reported that sharing the platform with him was Belfast County Grand Master George Chittick, PUP spokesman Winston Irvine, and Gerald Solinas, from the UPRG.
Police arrested Mr Aughey after a car struck several people on the Crumlin Road on Monday, seriously injuring a 16-year-old girl.
He was last night charged with two counts of attempted murder.
An Orange Order spokesman said: “As the incident is the subject of a police investigation, it is therefore inappropriate to comment.”
